General 2024/5 A League Men's thread

@Decentric @Monoethnic Social Club I'm wanting to get a good source on japan for the podcast. In particular their double pyramid system

Even with their connected pyramid club system, they are apparently aware that there aren't nearly enough professional pathways in Japan to bring through all their talent (despite having 60 clubs). They have apparently really worked on the non-club based pathways and a large chunk of their national team players come from outside of their club academy system

even if we have a 2 tier pyramid tomorrow with p&r we probably still have a lot we can learn from their double pyramid model
Sorry Grazor, I dont have any contacts in Japanese football... Try reaching out to some of the Aussie involved or that have been involved previously, there are heaps to choose from.

Peter Cklamovski
Arthur Papas
Musky
Popa, Talay, Arnie ... everyone has "had a go"

I don't about a good source for Japan?

I'd love to hear a podcast on somebody who did though.

Whilst some have written off the chances of CCM, WSW and Phoenix of making the top 6, the table is still reasonably close. My suspicion is that ADL and AK are safe, but positions 3 through 6 are still vulnerable to those lower down the ladder. Having said that, Aloisi seems to have United playing a style that is positive and with a winning formula. Their point overnight helps in keeping CCM at bay.
Yep definitely still up in the air. Given points accumulated and form over the last 6 games the table would end up as

AUCK52
ADL52
MAC50
WUN49
MCI44
SFC36
CCM36
WEL34
MVC32
WSW32
NUJ22
GLY16
BNE12

This seems to suggest that only NUJ GLY and BNE are long odds for the 6. That said there are enough points still available for NUJ to win every game and finish on 50 points which would put them in the mix for premiers. Still way too much football to be played to writing off CCM, WSW and Phoenix

Does anyone know a website that has stats/records for A-League assists? Most in each season, players all-time ranked etc.

In the first 5 rounds we had 9 Sunday matches. In the last 5 weeks we've had 2 Sunday matches. What's the thinking here? Maybe something about school holidays? The number of Saturday matches in that same period have gone from 14 to 19.

It's sucked not having Sunday matches recently... but geez the shift to more Saturday matches seems to be working a treat! History shows it rates better, and last time I checked, Saturday's are waaay better attended in ALM (about 14k on Sat and 9k on Sun).

I wonder if this was a test period, looking for a future shift towards more Saturday's? Preparing for the next broadcast deal?

4 games makes for a good Saturday morning but I wish we had at least one game on Sunday. In the end I want the league to work, so can live with a Sunday blackout if it helps

I am wondering whether this format worked at all. There were some cracking matches, specially early on but then the teams became tired and although the games were close they were because both sides were tired. Sides that are playing more youth seemed to have suffered the most. The upside is that the young players are hardened.

The remainder of the season will be affected by the amount of youth that have moved overseas. I am now definitely tipping Auckland to win simply because they have a squad with older players and they didn't lose any players.

Paul, the blogger from south melbourne talked about how there is a tradeoff between what is best for the roos and what is best for the league

However, I suspect that the tradeoff isn't necessary as the extra money in transfers could be reinvested into better squads. That is tricky with a salary cap tho. I favour replacing the salary cap with a luxury tax. @AliG040803 on the podcast suggested maybe salary cap concessions for clubs getting good transfer revenue

I am not sure that there is a trade off. The more success the Socceroos are the more exposure Australian talent gets which benefits the AL because they don't have to do marketing, that is, the Socceroos are the marketing and advertising of the AL.

As far as transfer fees, a lot of clubs (if not most) have a lot of accumulated red ink. I suspect that most if not all of the transfer money will go towards plugging that hole. Let's not forget that PG, NJ, and maybe one other have been under PFA administration recently. And right now MVC are not in the healthiest position.

Well run clubs like AU, SFC will use that money to improve their physical and human infrastructure.

Finally, clubs have the option of including two players outside the salary cap, so no concession needed. The danger of relaxing the salary cap for clubs that are getting revenue from transfers is that the AL could become like the Scottish league, two clubs that win everything every year and the rest wither.

The alleged trade off is that to max the socceroos you need to have clubs develop youth and play and sell a lot of them. In terms of fraction of minutes given to youth we actually aren't remarkable, similar to the eredivisie, jupiler league and old nsl
