I know he won a epl title but I never hear about his legacy as a player. Obviously these days you think of him as a pundit

He was big at Lens and won promotion. Successive English clubs shows he was decent for the day.

You don't hear about him the same way you do with other blokes. Is he underrated?

I remember reading a great article on Slaters career. He was loved in Lens, who are a working class team. He represented what they were, hard working. I tried to find the article but no luck.

Found this though and it was a good read. Had Maradona's respect: https://wwos.nine.com.au/football/d...-tribute/3bee93bf-a2eb-4068-a61d-6e89f42aa9cc

when I looked at transfermarkt of our old players a few months ago for a roar article, they didnt even have matches, let alone minutes per season, so I had to exclude robbie slater and players before him from my analysis

looks like that has changed! When I get time I will be able to do something nicer than a 25 game cut off and be able to do an analysis by minutes

looks like he had 4-5 good seasons in big 5 leagues which puts him in the aaron mooy, leckie, lazaridis, mat ryan level but below the golden gen level

seen him in old socceroos matches and that is probably about right

I was at the Sydney game.Slater had a top game-gave the Argentinian LB a hard time-was the best game he ever played for the Socceroos. So yes on that performance alone against top quality opposition he should be rated amongst our best players.

Yep nothing wrong with Bulldog.
Despite people judging and carrying on about his media work he done good for the Roos as well as his club career in the UK.
You could rely on him always putting in !

Nothing to do with him playing but he is a shithouse pundit.

Long time ago but I remember thinking he was one of our better players, in his era.
He was.

And streets ahead of the dross we've been putting out for the last 15 to 20 years.

Also, wasn't the sort of Socceroo that would go on strike or end up in a Tahitian gaol.

Diego said what he did about Bulldog just to humour him out of consolation, let’s be real here.

OTOH what Diego said about El Salvador & Cadiz FC icon Jorge “Magico” Gonzalez back in the ‘80s..he wasn’t embellishing✊🏼

Yes he was hard working & tough in an era where British managers ruled the roost in the EPL, Slater thrived, nowadays where Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch managers ruled the roost where hard work is still required, but you also need high technical ability, he would not get a look in.

Saw that game on TV.

I've also replayed it a few times, plus the away game. In those games he was a good crosser too. He is probably one of Australia's all time great wingers.

Correct me if I'm wrong but when Foster agitated to go on strike for better conditions and pay during the Tahiti days Slater told Foster to get fucked and told him not to do it.

Am I remembering that correctly?

This is correct.

Foster has always been an A Grade twat.

its not about comparing to todays game robbos.
He done good plain and simple in the time he played and even back then there would have been countless other players who would have been contesting his position.
