Hmmm good question ...Question for the South fans (hopefully not too obscure). favourite trialist to never sign for South? A fella called Ashford Michael Dawkins looked pretty nifty during Quintas's first pre season quite pacey and looked pretty good with the ball at his feet. Maybe the French(?) Center back that played for us vs Guangzhou R&F (I think he played for Knights)?
No just the three originals mate, Ajax, Hellenic and UnitedIf Im not mistaken 1959 refers to the date a few clubs were merged Greek, Jewish and Scottish as well. If you go to the bigger games there is usually an English flag present.
hey mate, it sure is... South Melbourne United had a storied history (and a great ground) but sadly declining support post WW2 ... Two amateur Greek migrant clubs were looking for a place to play and a club to be a part of and the merger was amicably arranged in 1959... Our first season kit was the big "Bloods" V with blue shorts and stripey socks and this kit still gets rolled out as a third kit or cup kit every milestone year...So I've learnt that South Melbourne is an amalgamation of three clubs.
Anglo club South Melbourne United formed around the 1930s, played in a white top with red V like other sporting "South Melbourne's", and brought the Middle Park ground to the table. It's fascinating history and questions are flowing through my mind...
How come the club doesn't claim the earlier foundation, 1930 instead of 1959? That would be a little more prestigious in my eyes... and bring Centenary celebrations forward a few decades hehehe.
And without wanting to drag up crap times of funky 90s club names and NCIP, has the club ever pushed or celebrated their own "Anglo" history? Or has it been forgotten, buried, something else? Can't believe this is the first I've heard of it!
That's a beautyhey mate, it sure is... South Melbourne United had a storied history (and a great ground) but sadly declining support post WW2 ... I get your point about lending a bit of gravitas to a much older history but 1959 is when we became the club we remain today ... thats good enough for our members

Mate Im with you, I LOVE the history of our clubs and our game... I really wish that one day, we mature enough as a nation to NOT bother too much if a club had Greek, or Jewish or Scottish or Maltese origins... maybe next centenary eh?That's a beautyI recognise that kit now but didn't know the history behind it. Awesome stuff mate.
Yeah I've been diving into club histories, a fair chunk are born from mergers. Some claim the oldest date, some the newest. I can see both sides really, honouring history vs not disrespecting the other clubs involved. Either way, they part of the countless tales of survival!![]()
I'm a big fan of the stripey socks hahaMate Im with you, I LOVE the history of our clubs and our game... I really wish that one day, we mature enough as a nation to NOT bother too much if a club had Greek, or Jewish or Scottish or Maltese origins... maybe next centenary eh?
Stripey socks have become a bit of fan meme BTW, I am a bit on the fence but some of our supporters really love them.... Mind you this is probably an AFL crossover thing as we also tend to like stripey AFL type scarves too![]()
Ill be there ...... finally going to see this and can't waitView attachment 436
