Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

Two straight wins in the league. From equal bottom with Knights to now 3 points clear of the relegation zone.

Key goals by Mikkola and Bonada got us back into that match. Saw the highlights of the goals and all were nicely put away.

With Marshall back, we now have a more settled backline. Charlie Leech coming on was effective and offered more attacking options.

I’m really hoping the Football Department is looking to sign a striker and another midfielder. They are the only signings that can make the strongest impact.

We’ll have Pope and Brennan back next week.

This Friday’s match away to St Albans is another relegation battle decider. They looked good against the Bergers and were unlucky not to take the 3 points at Olympic Village. We’ll need to keep it tight at the back, and grind out a result. Win and we’ll put some serious daylight between us and the bottom 3 teams.
 
2 things annoyed me tonight that i hope we see the back of.

1) Inglese up front
2) Harding as a wing back, the guy is an ordinary attacker but he is an even worse defender, i was fuming every time he was essentially the RB and one of the young punks were running at him, he of course gave away the penalty as well.

WIth everyone back lets just play our proper back 4 now.

Inglese was a lot more settled in midfield and way more effective so i alao struggle to understand the reason to persist with him up front...
Agree on Harding fully.

4 players signed apparently ..... hoping against hope that the striker is a familiar face :)

Agree completely.. The expeirment is over, Ingeles is a decent DM and good man to have come up for a set piece but the decoy #9 experiment should be finished.... Mikkola was a gun all game, what a gollazzooo and Bonada looks like he is improving fitness every match.. Best second half all season by a long shot but, and i have to eat my words here, George Mells MOM for that second half... I dont know what Tony the Yugoslav told him in the sheds at half time but it worked... he was EVERYWHERE

There first 2 choice keepers Siciliano and Graskoski were out plus Menelaou, Kolic and Reec. Two others who have been decent contributors this season one of the Hoey brothers and former South junior Minutoli were out aswell

I’m not sure how long these guys would be out for but they will struggle to win games without these players.

Hopefully we sign Menelaou his contract is up and didn’t get senior minutes this season. He’s captain of there youth team and I believe we were interested in him last year before he got given a pro contract with Victory.

Kolic would be another decent signing for us but I would expect him to go back to Knights if he was to be released by Victory.
 
Have those players been unavailable for a while? Almost certain they didnt play against Heidelberg either. I cant see Victory winning another game. If South put 4 on them (should have been more) i cant see them containing anyone else, the winter will be a tough slog for them.

The path to survival for us is now pretty clear, finish above the current bottom 3, all 3 of which are worse than us.

Knights are probably the wildcard still as i can see them bringing in 6-7 players shortly, port are broke and wont do anything and mv dont care.

3 of those listed players played against Bergers the rest didn’t.

Knights new board has been talking a big game and have apparently signed 5-6 ex A-League players.

We’re not out of the woods yet but we should finish above Port and Victory.

We need 4-5 signings in the upcoming window. A Menelaou type midfielder and a gun attacking midfielder and striker are the priority. Another winger would be ideal aswell too which will allow Brennan to come off the bench and be a threat with 20-30 minutes at the end of games

Yeah I would expect Knights to make a huge splash, they wont go down without a fight.... For all the dick tugging and hugs and kisses we are only 6 points clear from stone motherless last....

Its NOT Knights we have to stay ahead of its Altona and be nibbling at or above Gully by the time the window opens..... 30 more points are on the board, we need, I reackon, at least 12-15 more to be safe.... thats a huge ask...

Leech is better cover than Menelaou in my opinion... we need firepower... 4 goals and 2 were from our centre halfs?
 
12 is the maximum needed imo, go through past years 27 is enough to survive, this year it will probably be about 25. Port need to win 5 of their last 10 just to hit 25 and knights need to better that, very difficult. I actually think MV will finish bottom.

I dont trust our club when it comes to transfer windows, we have the opportunity to put all this to bed in next few weeks.

Lets see what is announced tomorrow night (if anything)..... and then what result we get away to Dinamo... a decent win and all of a sudden weve gone 4 in a row heading towards a decent home crowd for a change with some positivity ... anything can happen then.

The Preston game is a nothing burger in the context of the season but it WILL give us a huge boost to win at home in front of a crowd...
 
Win at St Albans and we are a serious contender to stay up.

With a win at Churchill Reserve, we would move to 18 points. Depending on other results, we could be 6 points ahead of the relegation zone.

Then we face Preston. I’ll take a draw there given we’ll have a cup match before that. Preston are decent enough to play finals.

Port looks broke and doubt they’ll do much in the transfer window. Victory kids should see little success over the next few weeks.

Let’s see what the Knights do in the transfer window, but it may be all too late by then.

We need to also keep an eye on Altona Magic as well. The aim should be to finish above Altona Magic and St Albans. That would make for a far more relaxed ending to the season.

Have you heard whether they are from other NPL Vic clubs or are they interstate players?
 
Any word on the names of those players?

We also need an upgrade on a backup goalkeeper but we can probably worry about that at the end of the NPL season. Fingers crossed Lopez gets through the rest of the season.

Has anyone heard any updates on Archibald and if he’ll be returning this season or is he done for the season?
