The Australian National Football Team General Discussion*OFFICIAL*

It's harder to cap tie them these days. They have to play 3 games or get picked in a World Cup or Asian Cup finals squad..
I agree to an extent but for the preliminary round against Bangladesh, Lebanon and Palestine offered ample opportunity and by then even 2min the end Bahrain away or China at home would suffice. Idiotic by Popovic.

Fair point that Popovic may be too tough. His older selections suggest the majority of the young generation pisses him off and he wants to have young players only who show the maturity. Can't say Irankunda did anything wrong but a lot of things happen that we don't know about.

Also a second point if also questions FA’s scouting processes if they have one of course, countries are searching for players whether it be here or overseas that have an Aussie passport and we should be on it to any eligible possible player that could be available starting from the youth teams.

If it means sending our youth teams to European camps or tours to get in the national set up it should be looked at even it costs more cash.

Australia has got to work double the time given a lot of players come from the same cloth from duel nationalities.

Can anyone think of a tall, technically neat, defensively strong 6 at any level in australia?

Only other one Im aware of is okon

You need players like that when facing a deepblock because they let you commit an extra player forward without committing defensive suicide

If okon doesnt come good we will have another 4 years of haram ball

Ryan Teague & Patrick Yazbek, Calum Nieuwenhot, Maz Balard,.

While I agree that some of Poppa's decisions were strange & Triantis deserved a run, he has made his choice & I for one, feel that maybe he was the best one, not convinced, but we have lots of defensive midfielders, but we don't have too many Volpatos.
Lets move on his heart wasn't with the Aussies & fair enough, but I would prefer someone who wants to play for us.

Balard - 178cm
Teague - 182cm
Yzbek - 178cm
hof - 181cm

all 4 of them are really central mids than cdms

Nah you have to earn it. Unless we produce a player who is completely irreplaceable (yamal, messi etc) then I'd prefer we have some pride tbh
I've said previously this is basically where I sit on it.
I'm disappointed, but unless you have self respect it will happen more often in these cases.

With the new rules it's not just a one time cap. Are we going to 3 cap every possible dual national in a competitive fixture? That doesn't seem possible. Even if we did you then end up with Ned Zelic.

I believe Triantis has been a youth rep for us through every age group. Grew up here, was in the system, had earned a call up and would have played in the immediate future. Popa has no blame here, Triantis just picked Greece. It seems absurd to me that one sub appearance would have made the difference, and if it would have, why would we want the Zelic attitude?

Like Okon Jr earnt the call up to the Socceroos training squad?
Perhaps sometimes these young kids with a bit of potential are brought into a squad so they get an opportunity to see the setup, meet the coaching staff and allow the coaching staff to get a better look at them. There is no way we will ever use 26 players in a 2 match window so I think it serves a useful purpose.

Popovic wasn't the coach back then and we did give a few players their first start or appearance in the two dead rubbers against Bangladesh and Palestine. I think from memory saw one or two in the last Lebanon match as well. I don't believe that 2 minutes against China would have made any difference to Triantis' decision.

I think you are right about Popovic wanting maturity, in both a football and personal sense. What Irankunda did wrong was show immaturity in a football sense, mainly through a lack of experience. His one starting appearance for Popovic was in an unfamiliar setup and an unfamiliar position. He really looked lost on the field that day. He has a years experience in other setups and now goes to another club where he will get more. If he stays injury free I think he will be a big part of our team for at least the next couple of cycles. He may even develop into a very good No 10. I would be disappointed if he doesn't appear in the upcoming friendlies.

I can sympathise with Triantis, he was snubbed, and the likes of Brattan played instead. This is what happens with young kids. Unfortunately, though he is of Greek parentage, he has lived and grown up in Australia, albiet with Greek parents. Where is he going to live out his days? Here or Greece? Will he do a Dukes? The chances of him residing in Australia long term is high. Greece is a place people leave, its not a place to move to. Whilst its his decision, I feel its one he'll regret.

For me it wasn't about the decision to not sub on Triantis in isolation that must have led to this decision - the fact that he was chosen for media commitments wearing the full kit in the lead up and so on - all this reeks of horrible communication and man management YET AGAIN from a manager that clearly has a massive ego and doesn't make an effort to connect with all the varied personality types that exist at the elite level. The best managers know who to put an arm around and who to give a bullocking to.

Maybe more of the reason Popa keeps picking players he has worked with before and knows is because it's straight up easier for him and doesn't force him to expand on his obvious shortcomings.

I don't hate the bloke...I just love Australian football way more.

Watch Teague getting his cap. Triantis is sat there sulking. He needed to just take it on the chin and keep working. However, he was less prominent on the training pitch indicating Popovic preferred a few others and he felt it wasn't worth his time.

making him the media man and then not playing him is indeed poor mad management if true

if you are just bringing him in don't put him in front of the media

I agree it serves a useful purpose, however it wasn't the time to have a look at a player that, at the time, was club less & spent the previous season in a reserve team.

Yeah it was a monumental fuck up by all involved, mainly Popovic. #Poppaout

Tyrese Francois, if he has a good season this year at Wigan and stays injury free he could be an option. Playing as lone 6 in a 3-1-4-2. He's not that tall though lol

Priceless footage. Stuff like this needs to be backed up and archived. So many perspectives.
