I’m torn on this one. On one hand, I’m gutted that Poppa didn’t get Triantis onto the bench and give him some minutes to cap him, rather than picking Brattan, etc.
On the other hand, things had gotten ridiculous with the antics of Robertson and Volpato during Arnold’s reign, and Poppa needed to draw a line in the sand with those who wanted to treat the national team as a backup option or demand a place without having fully established themselves in their club careers.
Before being picked by Poppa, Triantis’s press statements clearly showed he was in two minds. We don’t know how he performed in training, and in Poppa’s defence, he got us out of a hole and qualified us directly.
But who knows—maybe Poppa stuffed it up by being too tough.
