The Australian National Football Team General Discussion*OFFICIAL*

TBH the point is that you really have to play or have played for one of the 'big clubs' in the ALM to be considered in most cases. At the beginning of the ALM Alex Wilkinson was by far the best defender. Instead Spiranovic was lauded. Wilkinson only got picked when he was overseas and then continued to be picked when to be honest he was in nowhere near the form he was earlier.

Guus picked Wilkshire from unfashionable Bristol City who went on to be a regular for the Socceroos for 80 games. I suspect that Popa at this stage has not done the homework across the board that Arnold did over a number of years and has relied on players he knows. He now has time to do that homework. Guus picked only a few ALM players but would have know the majority of the NT from Europe. TBH the team that qualified will probably struggle to make the top 32 at the World Cup.

As you said Teague didn’t get to as many against Japan, but still won 3 out of 3 unique 1v1s contested in the first 45 mins. The maxim is the best players often possess a strong self-belief that they can make a difference when they have the ball. This confidence allows them to take initiative and make plays that others might not attempt. In my mind Teague, because of the Japanese press, was not confident enough to put himself in the position to influence the game the way others would which meant we avoided the midfield. Yes it was caused by the Japanese press, but it isn't going to get any easier at the World Cup.

You can justify stats to why Teague did ok to well in the games but that is not the point. He wasn't the best performer before that i find it hard to justify him in the squad at all and your stats make no allowance for his lack of willingness to take on difficult balls. His run of the mill games in the ALM over the last couple of season were pretty good but he got outplayed in the big games. How many small games will there be at the World Cup.
Good post, PJ. You've made a lot of good points!

Not quite sure what 'lack of willingness to take on difficult balls' means?

It wasn't just Teague who was closed down. Ditto O'Neill. Japan brilliantly targeted this area.

I'm not sure that CCM players are overlooked by not being a big club? Having said this, I agree with you that as soon as Ange chose Wilko as a CB, he immediately did a good job for the Socceroos. Wilko should have been selected a lot earlier.

Sains, as a Mariner, was identified a lot earlier as a potential Socceroo. He had a few very good seasons whilst young, then played virtually no club football for years.

For mine, Nisbet's skill set is needed more than Balard's for the Socceroos, despite where they play their current football. I'd love to know Popa's rationale for overlooking Nisbet?

The other issue, is that players always have, and always will, make club career choices that can be detrimental to their international careers.

Like Wilko, Arnie made a huge mistake selecting Geraint Jones, et al, over Jason Geria. Like Wilko, Geria has one straight into the Socceroos and been one of the better players on a consistent basis.

Uncapped players. Shows good depth and also how merit for some is ignored.
Love reading this.

Just take Volpato out! I'm astonished at what the obsession with him is?

He does not want to play for Aus!!!!!!!!!!!

Who posted this? Iredale as CB?

It is quite comforting we have so much depth these days. There are a number of talented players who have made recent bad decisions, or suffered injury, at club level who could be in the Socceroo frame too - Jake Hollman, Lachlan Brook, Nieuw.

Volpato is playing at a high level and his offensive impact at club level is something we could use. I think he'd be perfect on the right in the inverted right forward role. I think we should select our best available team and see what decisions are made by the player once selected.

From James Dodd on X:

CONFIRMED: Nectarios Triantis has officially how switched his nationality to Greece.

Now eligible to play for the Greek national team.

Turned down the chance to play for the @Socceroos.
that's a shame, wish him luck and off the list of players I follow and give updates on

Very disappointed. He comes from a large football family. I wonder if they have moved back to Greece to be closer to him and the extended family. I suspect this is going to be one miss we regret.

yeah having a hardman number 6 who is technically neat is a profile we aren't producing very much of.

Okon is a giant and technically a beauty, but it the only other player I can think of (will wait to see how he handles the physical side of the game)

Hugely disappointing. Got worried when he got called up and didn’t even make the bench. C’est la vie.

It’ll be funny if, after all this, in a couple of years Volpato realises he’s not going to make the Azzurri and chooses the Socceroos instead.

This is on all on Popa, FA this should have never got to this stage.

Someone that’s comes through our system represented Australia and came through the a-league set up this should never had happened.

After Merrick leaving who has done nothing when it comes to these matters, who is in charge of trying to convince these duel nationals to go play for us is anyone’s guess.

Serious football countries would not act this even with the talent we have is not at level that this stage (yet) we clearly are not one acting like we want to be.

Overall what a farce what a mess.

Fuck off Triantis. Less to blame him and more Arnold and Popovic for the stuffing around.
I don't know what happened in March, but Popovic has brought a few youngsters into an extended squad to give them a taste. Maybe Triantis spat the dummy because he wasn't put on the field, maybe he just looked at the setup and decided it wasn't for him. Popovic actually picked him for his extended squad and he decided not to play. This decision was entirely up to Triantis, not the Australian coaching staff.

Triantis is probably best with a single six at the base of a midfield triangle where we are trying to dominate

Im not sure where he would fit in poppas system of two cms, no cdms or cams

Whilst I agree, Volpato was picked in the 2022 World Cup squad and turned it down...so the decision has been made some time ago and ever since once the player was selected.

I don't care how good he is at this point that ship has clearly sailed.

I don't like the Triantis saga. The guy is an Aussie and there is no doubt if Popovic offered him the chance to make a sub appearance then he would have jumped at it.

I mean this was no more than 5 months ago!!

Triantis himself needed some maturity but his background sulking when Teague got his cap was somewhat telling. All Popovic needed to do was give late cameos and thankfully we were in control of the game at the time.
