The Australian National Football Team General Discussion*OFFICIAL*

UAE to bid for Asian Cup 2031. Indonesia apparently putting a bid together.

I guess at rwb his competition is karacic, Miller, strain, peiras, leckie, metcalf and Adamson. Is he in the top two options?
In my opinion or Popovic's? I'd have Bennie and Strain. My bet is Popovic will pick Miller and Strain. I'd like to see someone with more attacking end product at RWB. Millers hit and hope and a heading threat.

Can't see Pieras being selected, Leckie is just back from a long term injury and he would have to be a last resort, Metcalf has yet to play after injury. So that leaves Karacic, Miller, Strain, Adamson. We know what Miller brings and I am not sure how Karacic is progressing. Adamson?
Also are there any FIFA rules regarding the number of players that can get invited to the camps? If not, then definitely invite Bennie, Jovanovic, and Badalato. Maybe Memeti but I think there are other players that could be invited.

Okon-Engstler is one if you can add invitees that aren't in the squad.

Okon-Engstler is the one who has most impressed me from the U20s, but there are others that weren't in that squad for a range of reasons (like Irankunda) or even Haine Eames who has looked great for CCM in a rebuild year. I'd be looking at adding those two for sure for the WC.

I am a fan of Bennie but he's way behind Strain in my estimation and even behind Miller. He has a lot more work to do against men before I'd be confident to have him in the Socceroos. Has he even played a full game for QPR yet?

Bit of history with Boyle getting the first Roos goal in the new kit. Is it accurate Mabil got the first in the last?

Imagine that for some record. Scoring the first and last for a certain kit. Now I wonder who scored such in other Australian kits. Homework time!

Skoko the first in the 06 WC kit? Did we wear it against Greece?

Meanwhile in the USA, terrible crowds for the Nations League. I mean they did play on a weekday afternoon and a bronze Playoff probably had high ticket prices.

Donovan has come out saying he's tired of hearing for talented the squad is and the clubs they play for are massive. It's very true about the USA. I think if we had such a list of clubs we'd be very frustrated at their exploits.

For Australia however we still have such a talented cohort who haven't been given the chance yet. I just want to see it. If it doesn't work then sure, go back to grinding results.

Has the USA ever had a strong national team? It seems they don't have much to show for the sport

an interesting question - considering the amount of $$$$'s pumped and the so called growth of the MLS that in turn should/has grown pathways you'd think far longer than the league you follow.
They sure have had some top performing players over the last 20+yrs but imo are still yet to be any form of force in the game.
Here's their history :
"The U.S. has appeared in eleven FIFA World Cups, including the first in 1930, where they reached the semifinals; their third-place finish, which was later awarded through overall tournament records, is the best result by a team from outside UEFA and CONMEBOL. They returned in 1934 and 1950, defeating England 1–0 in the latter, but did not qualify again until 1990. As host in 1994, the U.S. received an automatic berth and lost to Brazil in the round of 16. They qualified for the next five World Cups, a feat shared with only seven other nations.[10] The U.S. reached the quarterfinals at the 2002 World Cup, and eliminated top-ranked Spain in the 2009 Confederations Cup semifinals before losing to Brazil in the final."

So you could consider OK but really I don't think any countries would fear them much, sure respect but nothing more.
Losing to the Canadians is a huge derby like us and NZ, good on the canooks.

Here's a article re crowds as JS mentioned.
I just don't think football is their game no matter how much $$ is pumped in, MLS is set up like their other regular "show" events to attend.
Gimmicks etc typical merican having been to gridiron/ice hockey/nascar/BB - works for them.

For me the US national team was more about just getting mainstream popularity over there.

I remember in 2002 they had an excellent and surprising performance and the US news channels were so casual in their reporting. It was still very niche at the time. We must remember the time zones and internet was very different back then.

2006 they were well prepared but got belted by Czech Republic first. An impressive Italy draw but lost to Ghana.

2010 they were stronger with Dempsey coming through. I believe they went to Brazil with lower hopes given their group but advanced.

2018 was the trough where the football community really went hard at admin and bosses. I remember they were picking a lot of underdone players or those from MLS clubs and it felt like they'd really dipped.

2022 was rudimentary. The chance of R16 was good and lost to The Netherlands after that.

What about 2014 that game against Belgium was amazing

Whatever anyone says... the MLS is very much a success story by AL standards and whatever works over there should be looked at very closely.

Like Oz they have a massive problem getting past the mainstream sports but they've succeeded by focusing on the subculture that DOES enjoy football, rather than waste so much money on trying to convert the casual observers.

If only our aministrators would listen to the people who most give a shit...

well thats a very low bar by AL standards in that case.
What works at there is not applicable to here imo.
Lack of billionaires.
Even with and as per the 2 main codes our country is not as align as they are with franchise systems.
As you said wasting $ on casuals, the majority football people are in the local Associations and know what the game is and represents as per Europe.
The admin have been trying for 20yrs, many highs and many lows.
It will have to align one day for it will not be sustainable in the end having 2 football models and we don't have the pop to cover 2 needs.
Middy is all about following the MLS ways of gaining support, it just won't happen because the whole game is behind the 8ball and we are not like mericans getting sucked in by gimmicks but for freebi ticks in a plenty.
