The Australian National Football Team General Discussion*OFFICIAL*

Would NZ risk its certain place in every future World Cup (and the money that comes with that) for a much better competitive and game-growing future?
No, they would not. They are quite happy how things are. But they have very little influence/power.

My biggest concern for aussie football is us getting kicked out of Asia if China continues to not make world cups.

Big reason they went to 48 was to get some of these bigger populated nations in the tourney. I think if UAE, Qatar and China continue to not make world cups they may petition to vote us out as Oceania now has a direct spot. They have the money to sway the right people.
Very good point

Should Australia qualify in June, here are potential UEFA friendly opponents. The next round for the AFC starts in October so it's stupid we haven't arranged something regardless. No point playing in Australia as the season has just begun.

Sept
Finland Norway already sorted a friendly.
Malta, San Marino, Estonia (Tallinn away please), North Macedonia at a glance are free, Wales playing Canada already, Albania, Andorra, Gibraltar, Czech Rep available

Oct
Poland already play NZ FFS. Romania, Bosnia, Malta have sorted friendlies. NZ face Norway in same window. Wales face England. Even Liechtenstein are slated to play Montenegro. Albania are available and would be worth targeting.

Nov
Czech, San Marino, Lithuania, Finland, Cyprus, Israel, Estonia, North Macedonia, Kazakhstan, Latvia

Tallin away would be sick. It must be cool being so close. All of those options would be amazing.

It's such a mixed bag finding flights though. Australia has clear corridors while Germany has become so on and off with flights due to government fees. A rail and bus journey to Estonia via Poland will be something.

I don't see why we shouldn't talk to the Baltic states. I didn't check exact matchday availability but 2 UEFA teams would be good. Japan has played in France and Belgium against neutral opponents so if we can play Estonia in Bielefeld and Latvia Augsburg then I'm all for it!

I saw a post with Pele, Messi, Ronaldo and Maradona asking if this would be football's Mount Rushmore.

What might Australia's be? Tricky only choosing 4 and the whole debate on simply being Australian but efforts for the national team.

Some pickings for September/ October friendlies. UEFA slim pickings. Think the Baltic states and minnows have some openings. It should be a camp in Europe somewhere with 2 games.

Czechia has an opening.

Football Australia and Subway® Australia today announce that Subway® Australia’s Socceroos naming rights sponsorship agreement will conclude in August, following the natural completion of the current contract term.

Over the course of the sponsorship, Subway® Australia has been a proud and committed supporter of Football Australia, the Subway® Socceroos, CommBank Matildas and the broader football community.

Joining Football Australia in September 2022, Subway® Australia has partnered with Football Australia through some of Australia’s most iconic moments—including two record-breaking World Cup performances and a period of unprecedented growth in participation across the country.

With both organisations entering new strategic phases, the decision to conclude the sponsorship was made jointly, and with a strong sense of pride in what has been achieved. The sponsorship has left a lasting legacy, and both Football Australia and Subway® Australia remain deeply committed to supporting Australian communities in their respective ways.

“Subway has been a fantastic partner to work with, and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved together,” said Heather Garriock, Interim CEO at Football Australia. “Their support has helped us elevate the Socceroos brand, enhance our national teams programmes on and off the field, and elevate the sport to new heights.”

Shane Bracken, Managing Director for Subway® Australia and New Zealand added: “We’re incredibly proud of the impact our sponsorship with Football Australia has had. Supporting grassroots to elite levels of the game has been a privilege, and we’re honoured to have been part of so many memorable milestones.”
