The point is we play a comfortable qualifying phase now where we can afford to lose to the likes of Bahrain at home and still easily qualify, no such luxury in the old days.

3 blokes and a dog would turn up if it were held in SE QLD. Gold coast is wasteland for football, the sunny coast not much better and people don't even go the roar. Why are they going to watch teams that they don't even care about? They're hardly going to get more people than they would in Sydney.

And isn't the point of the 'unite' round that they're all played in the same city either in the same stadium or near abouts. It's 200km from the Goldy to the sunshine coast. (Further if you're talking Bundy.)

If this overlapped with any of the NRL you could forget about it in Qld. The place is a monoculture.

The GG couldn’t beat an Iran team at home, lost to Uruguay in their first attempt with a coach who was tactically clueless….anyway I rather look forward rather than look back, nostalgia for some won’t change anything it’s in the past now.

The game has far bigger issues with external factors as we are seeing with the media and the authorities who are trying to undermine the sport.

The game needs to work together we got the aleague and whether people we like it or not it’s here to stay plus we got the championship coming up which will hopefully bridge the gap and who knows maybe utopia with pro-rel might come sooner rather than later.

lets face it, this country produced better footballers during the period when the national league was semi-professional (not that the current national league is anything like a full time league, but the wages are)

I don’t think the AFC would allow teams in the national league to compete in the champions league if the league is semi-professional.

Again football has changed significantly since the 90s, no offense but why is hard to comprehend for some lol.

How would you know about the Sunshine coast? Professional football has never been exposed to this part of the country.

They are also about to have a perfect A-league stadium built there.

Ok then , explain 1981, losing to Fiji and New Zealand, both amateurs. 1989, losing to Israel, hardly world beaters. 1997 losing to lowly Iran. Not very tough or highly rated opponents for your so called “ golden generation”. And BTW that Scotland team, despite the names were shown up badly in Mexico, and the less said about Steve Nicol and that horrendous miss, the better.

New Zealand were and still are the Socceroos equivalent in world football. One could argue they currently have a better crop of individual players than Australia. Australia has no one anywhere near Chris Wood's level for example. Israel aren't world beaters, but since when have Australia been?

The point remains we didnt have a league phase qualifying path, you played cuthroat 2 leg ties and if you fucked up you were gone, none of this get 6 points in 6 games like we did in this campaign and still make it easily.

In 93 for eg we almost knocked off Argentina, but in the previous round we needed penalties to beat Canada...but we couldnt accumulate points. The qualifying path was like playing tournament football already, you couldnt play a heap of games for points and get continuity within the team.

I take the golden generation as those born 1975 to 1980. Outside those years there has never been a player that has managed more than 5 seasons in the big 5 where they got 25+ games in all competitions whereas i think there were 8 from that generation

Sorry i should specify outfield ppayers schwarzer was born 72 and managed 14 25 game seasons

An analysis I'm doing - unlike the introduction of a u20 team, academies, investment in national youth teams and introducing national second tiers, I couldn't find any advantage to professionalization


Take with a grain of salt though...I'm still trying to improve the integrity of my data set (will probably have to work with a football historian)
