Triple M’s Marty Sheargold blasted over ‘disgusting’ Matildas comments

... at least its not the culture of those pesky Croats and Greeks in the soccer though .... am I right :cool:
Not going to be lured back into the argument we had on the podcast thread so I'll be leaving that one alone.

My above post about Australia observing the worst aspects of American & British culture and observed it as ours stands.

This barracking of political parties like it's a football team is an American phenomenon and needs to weeded out of Australia pronto.

The last time an Aussie ‘comedian’ got sudden int’l press like this was when Adam Rozenbachs made a joke about the Chapecoense plane crash 9 years ago..

What is it w/these types & their dislike of ⚽️, srsly❓
Aussie and comedian , should never be in the same sentence.

Yes their are some funnie Aussies, just that they don't mean to be.

The issue is in the last 20-30 years we've observed the worst aspects of American & British culture and adopted it as our own.

Especially in the last 10 years or so.
Only 20-30 years ?

You need to remember the origins of this country. ( 1770 onwards )

Sounds like he follows football and the Matilda's have been shite and there is infighting I don't have a problem with his rant

I am new to this forum, hello everyone.

Very sad outlook by you sorry to say, rubbishing our girls and football in general and you have no problem with that.
As for the dum dum calling himself a comedian, it seems like the joke is on him.
Would he say the same thing about his fellow female swimmers, of course he wouldn't.

I think we got off on the wrong foot. I think it's wrong he said that but I just disagree with the outrage and celebrating him being fired.

I think the Matilda's and the FA need a right kick up the arse for performing bad and not having a coach but obviously you can't be abusive so this bloke should be forced to apologize and give money to a women's charity. My two cents thanks for the chat and look forward to more healthy discussions

There's a certain kind of person, usually middle/ upper-middle class, usually white and (in this instance) typically male, who likes to be seen as "one of the good ones" by supporting whatever causes are fashionable in progressive circles at a given time. Maybe they already have some degree of interest in football (the old Stuff White People Like blog went into more detail of this phenomenon in their chapter titled 'The idea of soccer'.) If they're from the southern states they will have an AFL club because you absolutely must support an AFL team to engage socially in Melbourne society, if they're from NSW or Qld they don't really follow Rugby beyond their old private school team because it's no longer fashionable, and a game like League is low-rent, supported by the actual working class and therefore beneath them. Their main motive for following the Matildas (subconsciously, at least) is an exercise in image-crafting. They want to be visible as the kind of person who follows the Matilda's, rather than actually enjoying the game for its' own sake. Having it known they follow women's football/ bashing other men who are indifferent or demeaning towards women's football is another tick on their 'Good, socially conscious male ally' chart and gives them the dopamine hit of believing they stand on the right side of history.

Right.

Thanks for taking the time to explain what you think.

I love how everyone says 'there's infighting' and they're acting like 'year 10 girls' but no one can point to a single player or incident which shows this is happening.

It's all just gossip and hearsay, hardly a smoking gun. Girls aren't playing well is somehow equal to 'there's infighting'.

Put up or shut up.

Annoyingly the timing of this overshadows the Young Socceroos achievements. Like they'd get much coverage anyway.

His words were so poorly chosen. I agree with comments how the Matildas have a certain immunity and there hasn't been a scathing harsh analysis of their recent performances. But should there be? Well, football journalism should commentate and I don't know whether the being kind notion is the way to go or not.

I've got to say though the knives were out so quickly by the usual suspects on socials screeching their outrage. They feel vindicated today.
I think these are two different things. I really don't think Sheargold gives a shit about football or womans sport and used the Matildas poor form to tee off for cheap laughs. Shock jock lowest common denominator stuff.

The Matildas form warrants scrutiny and deserves it from serious journalists and football people. It'd make a good podcast cough @Pasquali cough @grazorblade. Just dont get cancelled before you're started.
