Will update this semi regularly and base it off fotmob rating rather than my naked eye. Others can jump in if you think someones fotmob rating is telling porkies and someone else is better

cutoff year: 2002. Birth year and rating in brackets

Best after round 2

--------------------------------------------------------Beach (2003,7.08)--------------------------------------------------
-Kealey Adamson (2003, 7.39)-Jones(2003,7.12)--Kikianis-(2005,7.05)-Bos(2004,7.13)-----
-----------------------------------------Teague-(2002,7.40)---Valadon(2003,7.25)-----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------Alagich (2004,7.26)-------------------------------------------------------
---------------Adams (2002,7.14)----------------Botic (2002,7.36)-----Jed Drew (2003,7.56)----------------

Will be interesting to watch, last season the best 11 had a rating of 7.02, a couple years before it was 6.8 and 6.6 for arnie's olyroos iirc

Awesome thread. Always enjoyed the rolling Roos on Fox Sports so the Rolling Kids will help keep tabs on who's doing what.
Will be interesting to see how this evolves throughout the season!

Did you compile this yourself or is there a site that has such data sortable?

2003 and 2004 now higher numbers than 2002. Interesting too because 2003 has had a better start to europe than 2002 as well.. It also looks like 2004-2006 are probably no better than 2003. It looks like the changes of the ntc and academies are peaking for those born 2003 rather than 2001 like expected. Any thoughts on why this is? Maybe it took a bit to roll out (if ntc is to be credited) or perfect academies?

updated after round 2

Alagich and tilio lose their place but otherwise unchanged team

For reference here is the fotmob rating of a league graduates. Ratings taken from their last season before they went abroad

Starting 1st season abroad:
Genreau 7.24
Metcalf 7.26
Balard 7.38
Rowles 7.00
Devlin 7.35
Nieuwenhof 7.36
Bos 7.68
O'Neill 7.65
Nisbet 7.58
Baccus 7.23
Miller 7.12
Triantis 7.17 (started in scotland but not so much in championship yet)
Silvera 7.07 (sort of successful for middlesbrough)
Atkinson 7.25
Yazbek 6.64
Yengi 6.84 (wasn't sure where to categorize him)
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos 7.46
Ryan Strain* 7.36 (not sure what happened in 21/22? Was he unsuccessful aka bench warmer or injured?)

Not successful in first year

Italiano 5.21
Irankunda 7.19
Tilio 7.34
Gauci 7.02
Glover 6.77
Buhagia 6.86
Bovalina 6.74
D'arrigo 7.02
D'Agostino 6.75 (sort of successful)
Mo Toure 6.14
Al Hassan Toure 6.70
G Kuol 7.05
Koutroumbis 7.05

Too early to tell

Jacob Farrell 7.63
Raphael Rodrigues 7.00
Bennie 6.63
Lachlan Brook 7.08

Of course not claiming fotmob ratings are a definitive measure! And some of these clubs are harder than others! It kind of looks like 7.2 is a very rough cutoff if you want to do well early (unless you go to a big club like irankunda, gauci or glover).

Genuinely not to be picky or anything, Tilio is an ‘01…

Really enjoy reading this stuff keep it up.
Weird his fotmob profile was 02 but i checked it just now and its 01. It was wrong for ages (was also wrong on wiki)

Ill remove him from the list
Patrick beach also had his height magically change recently on wiki and fotmob around the same time

Another player whose age magically changed on fotmob was mo toure, from 2003 to 2004

being 2004 of course makes his early career even more impressive

olyroos squad

Adamson (2003,7.13), Alagich (2003, 7.18), Beach (2003, 7.04), N Blair (2004 6.03), Bos (2004,7.82), Bozonovski (2004,6.28), Cox (2004,NA), dukuly (2003, NA),ferkanus (2003, NA), Grimaldi (2003,6.28), Hammond (2003,6.63), Majekodoumi (2004,4.82), Paull (2003, 7.02), Peraic Cullen (2006, 7.22) G Popovic (2003, NA), Priestman (2003,6.73), Rawlins (2004,6.56), Reec (2003,6.11), Segecic (2004,6.19), Shamoon (2004,6.99), Simmons (2003, NA), Taylor (2004,6.50), Valadon (2003, 7.53), Vidackovic (2003,5.59), Vidic (2004,5.82), Vidmar (2004,7.53), Walatee (2004,6.42)

interesting to compare to the team of the season so far. A few players arent in form

I haven't yet put a cutoff on minutes (might do that in the new year) so yull and memeti make the team of the season this week

It is now a team that skews super young with leonard (2007) at cb, Memeti (2007) at striker, Jovanovic and Yull are a couple from 2005 who make it along with bos from 2004. The fact that only 2 2002 players make the team of the season and there are more 2003, and 2004 players getting game time than 2002 players, suggests that our youth development hasn't peaked yet, despite there being plenty we can do to improve it (nyl, pyramid, expansion etc)

despite getting a red, leonard will probably retain his spot and even be joined by vidmar by the time the round is over

Team is steadying now, but it is still possible for a debutant (randazzo in this case) to make their debut and make team of the season. After the new year I'll put a 3 game minimum cutoff in

Waddingham probably jolts into team of the season with that display. At the moment his best games remind me of watching viduka at knights (seriously, watch those games you can still see them) but there is too much gap between his best and worst games

put a minute cut on the team of the season and it looks pretty similar to what you would expect. A few players might come into contention by the end of the season (matthews, vidmar, bernando, di pizio and caputo)

Players in the top 33% of a league players

2002: Botic, JCP, Jelacic, Teague - 4 out of 16
2003: Adamson, Alagich, Valadon, Drew - 4 out of 17
2004 Bos, Scicluna - 2 out of 21
2005; Waddingham - 1 out of 13
2006: Randazzo (small sample size) - 1 out of 10
2007 Leonard - 1 out of 3
2008 0 out of 1

Players in the top 50%

2002: Botic, JCP, Jelacic, Teague, Bonetig, Popovic, Sapsford - 7 out of 16
2003: Adamson, Alagich, Valadon, Beach, Paull, - 5 out of 17
2004 Bos, Scicluna, Matthews, Piol, Vidmar, - 5 out of 21
2005; Waddingham, Jovanovic, Kikianis, 3 out of 10
2006: Randazzo (small sample size) - 1 out of 10
2007 Leonard, Memeti 2 out of 3
2008 0 out of 1

The younger players should improve throughout the season and I'd expect more to sneak into that top half. I think we probably continue to rapidly improve until the 2004 birth year. Any improvement after that looks slower if it exists. Based on this, if nothing changes (no new academies, no nst, no nyl) the socceroos probably peak when you have 8 birthyears of 2004 quality in a row hit their peak. So around 2036.

Interesting stat - 12 of the players who are over 12 on fotmob ratings are defensive players (including gks)
only 5 players in the attacking half

The next generation might be better, but it is still a team that will be better without the ball than they are with it
