My wife and I are throwing out a lot of children's books, as we get out of infant teaching. Since Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood, Three Billy Goats Gruff, plus Mem Fox, Pamela Allen, Roald Dahl picture books are ostensibly above my reading age, according to your profound diagnostic ability, would you like us to send them to you, Loops?

They are a bit lighter than Mein Kampf!

It's a tough gig. Since 2010 (when Mr C was published) I've made about $50k from six books. It's not nothing but you couldn't live on it.

My problem is that all three of my publishers were tiny little one man operations who outsourced editing, printing etc and had virtually zero marketing budget.

And saddest of all... I'm regarded as fairly successful for an Australian author.

You wouldn't do it unless you loved it.

Authors of your quality should not have to be promoting one's own books.

On another bookreading forum, all of us, including a published author or two, are looking for new book recommendations. Many of us have read all books written by some authors, even numbering 20-30. I will be doing others a favour plugging Mr C.

In fact, I've always tried to refrain from promotion on football sites (with the exception of my user name - which I don't always use). I'm mainly here to talk shit with other fans but every now and then someone makes the connection, which is nice.

Funnily enough, years ago on a Scottish site someone worked out who I was and said everyone in their remote village had read Mr C. Unfortunately, this meant that just the one copy had done the rounds ... but still good.

Haven't posted here for ages, Mr C.

I'm close to finishing, but I'm predicting a conclusion I won't like. It will be too sad. I really like some of the protagonists, and I intuit some bad/sad outcomes for them.

So I've read quite a few books in between finishing Mr C!

I've read so many books lately, I'm behind with reviews! I've also done little about recruitment to this G and G thread .

Have just read - THE UNQUIET GRAVE : DERVLA McTIERNAN.

Genre - crime.

Very consistent Irish/Aus based crime author who to date in 5 books I've read has never written about Aus. She is a lawyer who resides in Perth. I feel like all the books I've read by her are consistently good. A few authors have less consistency - like her peers, Chris Hammer, Jane Harper, Sarah Bailey.

Setting- Ireland.

In this book a body shows up in an Irish bog. It is initially thought to be a body from thousands of years ago, preserved by the bog. The body is then discovered to be a local school principal.

Main characters are Detective Sergeant Cormac O'Reilly and DC Peter ? They make a good team. There are some nice twists and turns in the investigation. Also, a neat complication and moral dilemma occurs in the conclusion.

SHATTERED : GABRIELLE LORD.

Setting - Sydney.

Genre - crime.

Main characters - PI Gemma Lincoln and Detective Sergeant Angie McDonald. They are best mates and work well together.

A strange killing occurs. All the forensic evidence points to a female forensic scientist - a mate of Gemma's and Angie's. Gemma is convinced she has been set up, whilst Angie thinks she is out and out guilty!

Neat twists and turns in the investigation, some moral dilemmas with a good conclusion. Like the interaction between the female protagonists and their personal relationships with the opposite gender. Satisfactory and neat conclusion.

Only recently discovered Lord's books. A really good author, but prefer her books with strong female leads, usually cops, much more than her books with a guy who is head of a forensic laboratory.

This was my introduction to Gabrielle Lord, and because I picked up the book based on what I knew of her sound reputation as a crime writer I did have some high expectations of her writing. However I'm afraid that I was a little disappointed. The plot line was a bit clumsy in places and the prose was well, let's say mediocre in places. The protagonist, Cass Meredith completely irritated me with her bullishness and lack of humour. It was also very poorly edited -- not Lord's fault -- but is was full of copy editing errors than any decent line editor should have picked up...

It plays out very much like an Australian cop show. Was my thing in my early 20's but not so much today.

No, although I thoroughly enjoyed English Literature at school. I think that it's a fantastic subject that really helps us understand human nature and the vast complexities of politics, culture and society. It's certainly an excellent subject choice for those passionate about all levels reading, critical thinking, and if you're involved in creative writing.

If you're not thinking critically about how the world around us works then, hell - what are you doing?
