World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Hahahahahahah you maybe right.... looks like I should make most of the second half so not all that bad....
Yeah don't go rushing home and shortchanging your daughter (or was it son?).

And, after careful consideration I've decided not to report Muz's homophobic slur.

I seem to remember Yengi getting nothing in the way of service in that game.

He is better in the air than Duke, much faster and has tighter close control. A good scoring record in L1 is decent - just back from injury in recent times so hasn't had a proper run in the Championship yet.

That said, I'm disappointed Toure wasn't picked and I'd like to have a look at Iredale.
I agree about Yengi... yes he didnt show much but (in my opinion) he didnt get any bloody service either...

Easy champ, there's banter and then there are lines that shouldn't be crossed....

Socceroos to win and keep a clean sheet.

Ryan to start at RB with a back 3 and have a flawless defensive game. Possibility he will make a decisive run that either sets up a goal or scores one just because he can (and did earlier this season off a brilliant Costa pass from memory).

Screw this 'realistic BS'. We are going to win this one outright.

First half to be the best Socceroos game we have seen live for a long time (that's for Mono).

We are the Socceroos and we are playing at home with a coach who does use forward motion to win games.

I assume you mean Ryhan Grant starting at RB and not Matt Ryan!!! Although I sincerely hope that Grant does not play, despite what you say I think he has been poor for a couple seasons, including defensively.

If he picks the best available then a 2 - 0 is possible, but I fear he'll pick rubbish.

He's already left valuable players out of the squad so my fear is he'll leave valuable players out of the starting XI.

Just for clarity - I am not saying I would have picked Rhyan Grant in the squad, because I wouldn't have.

I am saying that I think Popa chose him for the reasons and positive expectation I posted.

Line up imminent. Been coming up to 90min before kick off.

Is the 10min past the hour just a buffer for TV, traffic and the like? Japan has had baseball times in the past like 9:07.

one venue already ruled out and unavailable as Marvel Stadium is now out of contention to host Socceroos key FIFA World Cup qualifier against Japan on Thursday June 5th due to AFL has scheduled Dogs-Hawks round 13 clash on the same night as per Mitch Cleary confirmed Thursday Night footy schedule up til mid June via X this afternoon.
I just assumed that with the 4 games so far including tonight outside of NSW the next 2 home WCQ would be likely to both be in Sydney, I assume the announcement for both is likely be sometime after tonight's game, either during the window or later in November.

being a bit slow today

In many ways this is Popa's defining match of this phase. Saudi are our main rival for the 2nd spot after Japan so we have to get a result at home.

Unfortunately, to my mind, he's picked a weird and aging squad but there is some ability. A decent defence - some gems in the midfield and a bit of pace.

I worry that he's going to start with conservative dross, rather than pick the attacking XI we need.
