World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

omg everyone, that overall was not good. Surprised that the really good chances seemed even by the end of the half. Our passing is just horrid. But hey were still in it. I hope we get Duke off and Yengi on in the second half. I'm surprised Geria was giving the ball away so much early on, he is normally better than that.

for all the negatives that half I'm trying to think of a socceroos gk in our history that makes that tackle rather than fouling?

This formation is honest to god trash. It forces us to pick an awkward team.
Exactly. Revolves around passing it to Miller. Flat back 4 with Geria at right back then we can add Yazbek or anyone else in a crucial area.

a near pen and 3 reasonable chances, it hurts to be nil all, but we look shaky as anything in the defensive 3rd

lets hope our subs inject some much needed energy and we take our 2nd half chances

Miller just doesn't do enough attacking wise and is even suspect defensively.

Feel like one of Irvine or O'Neill need to be replaced by a player who can play slightly higher up or have a stronger player alongside Duke which would free McGree go side to side in behind two strikers.
Miller was better than Jordy Bos that half. If Miller had turned the ball over & lost possession like Jordy did, everyone would be ripping him to shreds on here.

to be fair this sort of game suits us since we are better without the ball than with it
That is only true if it means we have space to break and exploit. If we don't have the ball and can't break into space, it just means we are under heaps of pressure and sooner or later we will crack. But it does mean we don't have the opposition sitting back on their 18 yard line with 10 players in front of goal. We struggle to break that down.

Saudi are doing a good job at the high press and putting pressure on our defenders to move the ball quickly. A lot quicker than they normally like. It is forcing a lot of the quick turnovers.

I'm sure all of them have once for the national team. Maybe the ball flew out for the corner and we've easily forgotten.

I guess we are trying to fix two issues
- no z14 specialist (all forward players better in half spaces, so play mcgree and hrustic together in the half spaces in this formation)
-huge weakness at rb is mitigated slightly if there are 3 at the back. If we screw up playing out there is more cover

also we have an abundance of decent cbs. So it may not be the best formation, but given our personell I can see the logic

Miller needs to gain a better understanding on what he needs to do defensively but I think he is a real asset going forward. It was a similar story when he was with the Mariners in the ALM. I am still hoping he can improve his defensive play while he is in Scotland. Still some way to get there though. Come on Miller get a goal in second half!

Geria taking ball and moving forward to then pass is an asset.

Miller moving better and McGree seems to be filling the right holes. Quick turns and pass to him.
