World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

No, Martinez made himself big and saved Garang's shot. Garang did not miss the goal - his shot was saved.
Yes Martinez did save it by making himself big, no doubting that, I was just saying a little lower & it was a goal, a little higher it was a goal.
If you watch closely ball hit hand, hand did not move to ball, yes great save, but.

Reverse camera angles for goals show EPL keepers out very far every week. The goal Bahrain scored was something freakish. We've seen one or two this season in the EPL.

Just got to look how far out Neuer has been in his career and teams missing the only goal has spared his blushes. Teams would purposely pass the ball into that space knowing he'd race out. He's been out as far as the halfway on the sideline at times. Remember South Korea in 2018?

I agree. I take your point. However I still think it may be a factor.

Perhaps we should set up a NC based on the milieu of Middle East football and be inculcated in it.
Honestly, if it affects them this much and to this extent, then there is much bigger issues here that need to be resolved that a camp wont fix.

This is true JS96 and not just Bundas - EPL GK's come out halfway into their halves but heck we're talking about farfar better defense's and midfields not losing possession like we do.
Counters from corners expose the highlines mind you but we can't do that either :)

What's funny is that shot lower into the right corner is one of Maty's real weaknesses - getting low and his left hand down there. Strikers in the EPL used to target that area. So it was probably working for Garang in training.

But still a save. If the ball had hit the post our commentators would save Garang had the keeper beaten - but that is meaningless if the shot isn't going in. I must admit I always had a bob each way. If someone missed a penalty against me I always thought of it as a save caused by my intimidation - even when I was a scrawny 10 year old.

Marco Tulio actually talked him into going high, hard and left in a similar position (keepers tend to look at protecting the near post) - Garang crediting him for one of his early goals for CCM.

Not sure if it was an official VAR check but something about the Argentina players potentially handling the ball after the save when they celebrated. They didn't.

I've gotta say, this forum is so much better than the last in every way. Bravo!! It's a big reason why I'm more active on it. The last was just so tiresome even to just log in to post one comment. The functionality on here is exceptional. Well done!!

NRL draw out. Would suggest stadium Australia is available for Japan game. Didn't look at Indonesia dates.
Based off NRL draw, the following are out for Indonesia (although Brenton probably has the final word on this - I can't remember how many days before, I'm working off 4 days before, and 24 hours after - all times in AEDT/AEST as applicable)

Indonesia (March 20)
  • CommBank (March 16 - 4pm)
  • Adelaide Oval (March 16 - 12:30pm)
  • MCG (March 16 - 3:20pm, and March 20 - 7:30pm, and March 21 - 7:40pm)
  • Optus Stadium (March 16 - 6pm)
  • Stadium Australia (March 16 - 6:15pm)
  • AAMI Park (March 20 - 8pm)
  • Suncorp (March 21 - 8pm)
For the Japan game (June 5)
  • Stadium Australia (June 1 - 2pm kickoff)
  • Optus Stadium (June 1 - 7:20pm)
  • Penrith (June 1 - 4pm)
  • Allianz Stadium (June 1 - 6:15pm)
  • Marvel Stadium (June 5 - 7:30pm)
  • Newcastle (June 5 - 8pm)
  • AAMI Park (June 6 - 6pm)
  • Adelaide Oval (June 6 - 7:40pm)
  • Dolphins Stadium (June 6 - 8pm)
EDITED to incorporate AFL draw as well where possible

Ouch for Stadium Australia. Could be a 3 day gap?

I arrive in Oz on June 1 for a family visit and had been banking on the game in Sydney (it'll be the death of me). I won't travel domestically for it.

Could be 3 days. I remember reading the regs, but I can’t seem to find them anymore. I am sure it’s 24 hours afterwards, so might be 72 before. If that’s the case, the afternoon match at Stadium Australia may indeed allow them to host the Japan game. Will do a bit more of a google

One silver lining is the xg is rising each match for us

against bahrain and Saudi we had an xg of 1.21 both times

against china we had an xg of 0.9

in the first window both games around 0.6

most games, including against Japan and Saudi, the xg we concede is miniscule. The one exception was last match where we conceded 0.91. Need to tighten that defense a bit

Not sure who reading this saw Melbourne Victory v Western United game today?

Daniel Arzani was on fire in the first half! I thought Melb Vic played the best football I've ever seen in the A L in the first 45 mins, in terms of pure football.

Essentially, it was the Arzani Show - and possibly Machach.

Even if Kisnorbo is annoyed with Arzani over attitude, from what we saw from him today, no Aussies playing anywhere in the world have his creativity, flair, vision, balance on the ball when running with it, whilst keeping his head up, dribbling skills in tight spaces, first touch - and importantly playing through the central attacking third in creative attacking interplay - where the Socceroos have struggled to break down Asian defences.

Plus Arzani defends by tracking back, jockeying, tackling - which he didn't used to do.

As a fellow coach, me at a lower level, Kisnorbo is really unprofessional. The way he is intense in the dug out, incessantly shouting instructions to players, having tantrums, etc, puts players off. All of the game plans should have been done on the training track. Players want their coaches to be relaxed and let them play.

Because Kisnorbo isn't starting Arzani at times, should not stop Popa selecting our most gifted player. If Arzani isn't fit, he can at least play as a high impact sub for the Socceroos. The Socceroos are heavily reliant on game plans working. If they aren't working, Arzani is capable of individual brilliance that changes a game regardless of the prescribed game plan. Plus Asian teams don't know him - yet.

In the last game before this one, as soon as Arzani jogged onto the pitch as a sub, the entire Melb Vic team lifted. Arzani ignited the team. He took a pen and scored a few mins later.

If I haven't said it before, welcome to the forum, Verrelli.

It is nice having an active owner/admin too on G and G, who is accessible.
