World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

I had to find a full game and by no means might this be the best or worst example. Palestine away was our toughest of the of previous round.

12:24. Swift Ryan throw. Behich takes it with his left and goes back to Irvine who nudges to Ryan under pressure. Had he just spun naturally he can nudge it forward past his man to Goodwin who is in ages of space.

*12 mins

Behich received in limited time and space, whilst wide on left flank in an advanced opposition. He played inside to Goodwin, who trod on the ball! Again a good decision by Behich, executed well.

There was another action, where Behich may not have received the ball and not no opening his body out enough and facing forwards, where he passed back diagonally. If his body had been more open when receiving, he might have had better vision to play or move forwards.

At the same time, Strain thinking too slowly, ceded the ball to Bahrain, who played a dangerous cross into our pen box. I'm going to finish here, hopefully, Strain improved as the game progressed.

I can t see analysing the Behich actions further, because on most of these actions, I endorsed what Behich was doing. In general, he also was reading the game well.

Appreciate you going to the extent you did to give examples of what you perceived were generally dodgy actions from Behich. Might have only seen some, and I emphasise 'some', merit in you evaluating 2 of those Behich actions, JS.

At this stage, from the evidence you've presented, I will have to agree to disagree with your appraisals of Behich as a Left Back, JS.

Metcalfe has been unavailable. Goodwin was available for some of the qualifiers at least. Missed one game I remember. Has been played out of position on the right some of those games and it didn't get the best out of him.
Just looking at JS's video of Aus v Palestine in Kuwait, I see plenty of potential in Grazorblade's suggestion that Metcalfe will be ideally suited to right Wing Back in Popa's 3-4-3, 5-2-3, 5-4-1 system.

Appreciate your effort for viewing and replying. It's true that Behich took some safer options and that's warranted at times. Even more so in hindsight. It's just a bit more endeavour forward can really see this quicker chances appear. Perhaps Popovic can see this as Behich did go forward more against Japan and Bahrain. Those Bos bursts against Japan were exciting.

I agree. I think Metcalfe is a good option in that role. Unfortunately he's still injured. Hopefully we see him soon. I like Strain in the role also.

As has been noted, the Socceroos don't have much on the right side. At least with Geria, we have a solid right back but further upfield, the options are fluid. Trying Goodwin on the right was worth experimenting on. Arzani could come in because his form warrants it.
Also I noticed that JBos has been playing on the right for KVC Westerlo in the last few matches. Which I don't think it suits him although he has scored.

That's true, we've been light on in that position. I still don't/didn't like Goodwin on the right. I think Irankunda and Boyle are our best options there. Velupillay did well too.

How many more years for that? He's been here a season and a half?

I seem to remember it was 4 or 5 years in the Country before you are eligible. So much can happen in that time.

Is he NT quality? We do need RBs.
I think its 4 years for citizenship but 5 years under FIFA regulations before a player could be eligible to play for his/her new nation.

Getting excited with how many players are playing well. My ideal squad, which absolutely won't be near it.

Ryan Gauci Chapman

Strain Geria Burgess Rowles Bos Iredale

Balard Triantis Luongo Robertson O'Neill Nisbet Kalik Irvine

Goodwin McGree Boyle Irankunda Yengi Toure Velupillay Arzani Segecic

Reckon the defence is enough Triantis for emergency cover plus Metcalfe for RWB and Iredale versatility. It's just 2 games.

The way Popovic plays, he'll have Velupillay hovering as a wing, inside forward. I don't think we need to worry too much about target men if the others position themselves well.

I think Boyle has declined in recent times.

When he first played for the Socceroos, he stood out. Boyle seems to get knocked off his feet a lot.

His club form has returned the last couple of months, so he might bounce back

When Baccus came on for Mansfield overnight, it seemed he was utilised wide right from couple of comments I read, delivering some crosses and also taking corners. I continue to like him as rwb option in Popa's system.
