World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Some interesting selections, Matthew’s debut call up is something else given he’s only been involved in senior football for no more than 12 months! But well deserved nevertheless.

I think Courtney Perkins is a bit harsh to miss out given Grant was selected instead which itself is baffling.

Ballard deserves to be called up given he’s form in Holland, Caceres involved continues the Popa doesn’t look at age for selections and he will bring a lot more creativity and technical quality in that midfield.
I think Teague might be unlucky not to make this squad though.

For me the big surprise is actually in the attacking selections I’m not sure I agree with some of the selections such as Borrello, Boyle or Yengi.
I think the likes of Mo Toure, Iredale and maybe Jakolis are a bit unlucky not to make it.
Even Irankunda but I feel he needs to be involved in senior football before he gets selected in the national team again.

Big games coming up, we should qualify for the World Cup but plenty of opportunities for players to stake their claim in this squad.

Excited that Ballard is in. Not unhappy with Caceres and Matthews. Surprised about Grant. Disappointed that Behich and Degenek are back but happy Yengi is. Not a bad squad.

Is that 7 A League players? I like that, in that it gives fans and players a feeling of identity with the squad. Don't know how Grant is still there, though.

Re the midfeilders and Caceras barbs.
MIDFIELDERS: Max Balard, Anthony Caceres, Ajdin Hrustic, Jackson Irvine, Riley McGree, Aiden O’Neill, Patrick Yazbek.

I do not care of his age, he is the best ball player of them all imo.
Age ? well whatever, bet you McGree/Balard/Oneill/Yazbek would luv playing with and off him - his vision/distribution to the front is the next bonus imo.
I'd have him instead of Irvine for eg.

Glad Balard was finally chosen. Those "forwards" though are a sad indictment on the state of Australian football.
And Poppas selection. No Toure, Irankunda, Iredale, Stama or Silvera. We're not doing ourselves any favours.

In the press conference Popovic said that Robertson actually made himself unavailable and there was nothing to do with paper work.... leaves a bad taste in what he said in the last one, why were they talking about it being a paper work issue?
The paperwork issue was last window so assuming it was sorted by this window?

Some interesting selections. Good to see Yengi back, hopefully he can have a bit more impact this window, we have to get to a stage eventually when there's better options than Duke. Also not sure about Grant... just doesn't excite really (still thinking of those two wasteful chances he had against Hiroshima in the away fixture)

Can only assume that Luongo is being given time to recover fully from his injury. Why else would he have been picked last window (and then injured) and not this one?

Grant over strain/ karacic?
Behich of elder?
No iredale or toure?
Degenek haven't played a game in good knows how long aswell
Some very odd choices

Degenek last played in December 2023. Almost a year. Surely we had better options.

I still believe Degenek to be a better player than Burgess.
that maybe so when he's match fit compared to Burgess.
I agree he's a better all round defender but is he match fit ?

Way too much incorrect rotation and overloading on centre and right backs.

Most drops are fitness or form based.
