Shark, seriously you really not getting anywhere behaving like a bitters bitter as well.
Carrying on as such is futile looking to stir others up ?
The SMH angst you may or may not have is done and done so many times before, obviously they tried to join the AL in the past for there was no other path but they have let that go and imo realise its not worth the trouble sometime back.
The APL is like a boat floating of middle of the ocean with engine and rudder troubles waiting for rescue but no one can find the bearings.
From a business outlook where I come from I see many many Industries have been going through acquasitions and consolidations - last 10/15yrs.
Big business no matter the commodity has been buying up opponents or forming co licensing agreements adding strength to their portfolios, then there is ongoing investing here and abroad.
WHY is it the many Franchise opportunities have NOT been taken up ?
TBH for a large investor say a APL license is $10 or $20M, that is pittance to a ogarlord and/or a large Corporation to invest in. Pittance.
Why hasn't Canberra been taken up (putting aside local politics) ? look how long it took for the Jets to finally have a Investor.
PG went for a song recently in desparation if I recall right.
Add in any other fish where the fish are region for a APL Franchise - where are the buyers if its such a good product ?
Barring the recent NZ/Auckland franchise overall this model is ludricous to grow football here let alone making the buck that and investor wants.
We do NOT have the population to sustain a model like the US/MLS.
Franchisng seems to work for fast food chains (for it caters for anyone) amongst other things and even they have their retail challenger's and some go broke.
We have a football system that runs on a champayne taste on a beer budget and has limits/barriers.

Let the little racist be mate.... For 20 years he has been told to be scared some dark skinned person is going to root his missus and drink his beer.....

From my perspective, I think a club in Tasmania would make perfect sense. Seem to have loyal followers over there, and perhaps just come to an agreement to play in the same stadium the new AFL team will play in? Whenever that stadium actually gets built mind haha. But sure could find a temporary home.

When it comes to the A-League, sense is not a factor. It's only about the mighty $. That is how you get into the A-League. If South Melbourne or Wollongong or Strikers or any number of NPL clubs handed the APL a cheque for $50M today they would be in the league next season. Simple as that. That is why we haven't seen any expansion in areas like Canberra or Tassie or Brisbane. Nobody is willing to pay APL the asking price. It has nothing to do with geography. On paper you'd think Newcastle Jets are a great buy. Good location, good venue, great community support, yet finding a buyer took years. Buying an existing club is way smarter than starting one from scratch. If they struggled to sell Jets, getting an investor for a new club is going to be near impossible.

Ryan, Tassie is 2 5ths of f all sorry not to offend the good few people I know down there.
Plus, playing football let alone presenting it on the screen on a eggball afl sized pitch just looks absolutely wrong period.

Oh ok appreciate the post friend. New to this stuff haha.

Canberra bid seems almost dead for whatever reason. Plenty of other areas that I think the fans would come, but as you say, its does seem all about the money.

Ummm WHAT??? We "handed a cheque for 19 million to the FFA in 2018 and didn't get in?

Agree with the rest though :)

Fair enough, I was just thinking of how whoever wants a team there could save money haha such as not having to build their own stadium. Not an easy thing at all. Expansion over here in the USA is easier due to not having to worry about having enough fans as it were and even though the MLS requires an expansion fee, the groups that generally want a team in a certain area, do not have money issues. Far from it so are willing to bid and pay essentially whatever the MLS wants.

I think expansion will happen in the A league though Lord only knows when or where that will happen. A lot of soccer hungry fans in the country it seems that would love a team to truly call their own.

The fans are there.

mate 20 years ago the bloke who owned the Westfield Shopping Empire took a trip to the States and saw an opportunity to emulate the MLS and make some coin selling franchises to his rich mates... the rest, sadly is history :(

If old Trumpie keeps deporting all the Latin Americans over there mate, you wont have too many Soccer fans left :P lol

Are we getting a bit too hung up about licence fees? Aren't they really just payment up front of costs? All the travel, all the accommodation, all the personnel, security, admin, refs, branding etc. etc.? And if you're lucky you get some distribution refunded. I don't really see it as a big deal worth concentrating on.

Unfortunately didn't pan out well....but something had to change, no point flogging a dead horse.

Sure, then "for the good of the game" the APL may be persuaded to waive ALL future license fees, or make enough to cover "All the travel, all the accommodation, all the personnel, security, admin, refs, branding" for the new team coming into the comp ... should be no more than 1-2 million I guestimate..... Would certainly mean both Canberra and Tassie will be up and running in weeks.... I wonder why they dont want "whats good for the game"?

HG, don't think anyone hung up about but obviously it is to prospective buyers for there isn't many jumping into the fire is there.
That up front fee sure wouldn't go much back to a new business owners running costs, more so to the APL HQ and its operations.
Point is as a Franchisee the first instalment is just to have the brand for use, then add in the ongoing weekly ingoings outgoings as you've mentioned + invest in your academy, + staff, +++++++++++++++++++
Refunded ? yer to date the $500k per club's '25 season.

Yeah they'd need a massive tv deal. Considering inflation since COVID, everything has basically doubled, they'd also need a tv deal double whatever their largest deal was just to keep up (pun intended 🤑).

And the fee isn't just for one season, they're getting these clubs locked in until 2034, so it all adds up. Hopefully one day, with pro/rel and a healthy tv deal, clubs go up and have a share of the league while they're in it. Like EPL, I think.
