Expansion Thread

Those with the money will decide where to invest. Having been there during Palmer's failed experiment, I think Gold Coast can work. Forget Tasmania. No private money and the state is broke.
Whenever I've spent time on the Gold Coast, which is a lot, it always feels very cosmopolitan and youthful. A region that is certainly cementing its status as a premier lifestyle destination both domestically and internationally.

A little light on arts and culture perhaps but you've got the tourism, retail and hospitality industries that are always booming. For graduates, industries like health, education and science, film and creative industries. And a popular study destination for regional and international students.

So you'd be thinking it's an ideal location for an A-League's club?

But 'WhatAmIWatching' is probably thinking of it's transitional nature of the Gold Coast's demographics. People constantly coming and going. Hard to build up a strong sustainable support base for a club perhaps??

Hopefully they'll get another one there eventually. My missus is from SE Qld and it's where we're eventually heading off too. So it'd be great for me! Brilliant mid sized stadium. I saw a Titans game there and even half full there was a good vibrant atmosphere.

I have also known plenty of people over the years that retired to the GC and people who live on the GC for golf & beaches but work in Brisbane. So, the demogrpahics are self selecting and different. Which is why I pointed out that only NRL has been successful (and only thsi decade) in establishing a presence there.

I cant say it enough, You want to test these new franchise teams viability, run them in the NST, set it up as home and away and in a few years with pro/rel let them achieve the goal of top tier the proper way, the real footballing way!

No more expansion not based on merrit will mean limited failures..
Alternatively i would rather set up the most established teams in these regions in the NST and give them the right to go up with their established bases, histories support etc.

All else is continuing to serve an already failing system!

Makes absolute sense. But I expect it never to happen. Best we can hope for is a version of the MLS model.

Best post on the entire thread.

Agree but…..$$$$$$

Not sure. Just saw snippets in articles from the time. The quote below was in The Age, 2003 I think.

Also can't believe that quote from the Knights below! That's actually a huge statement from them. Admirable.
I told you WE wanted expansion.... it could have been so much better :)

So Lowry is often the bogey man for people unhappy with oz foot all, but is the true bogeyman the pfa?

Opposed a 2nd tier at the start of the a league. Interesting jj has avoided the pfa in consultations about the nst

Oppose a domestic transfer system as it is incompatible with a salary cap

Enforce rules on how much players can go to schools to promote the club such that we apparently do it a lot less than other codes

Anything else?

Nah, every group is part of the problem. Every group behaves the same way. You can have X only if we can have Y. Well you can have Y only if we can have Z. It's one big circle and nothing gets done. Every group is both the cause and the symptom. All boils down to how the FA is structured.

Question for the a-league folks, how many times has this happened? (potential investor talk)
As Roar fan, way too many times. Now it seems that no one is interested in us. At one point we had Celtic, Red Bull, and a group from the US. Bakries turned them all down because they were not offering what they wanted. So they all walked away.

My mind is completely broken in regards to the league, any room for growth is negated by linking aspects to poorly run league system. The whole thing is completely unsustainable. If only people knew how bad things were...

I'm keeping a keen eye on Wellington's home match in Christchurch today! Both wings look nearly sold out. Hopefully they crack 12,000.

This is held at the now 13 year old temporary stadium. It's hosts 18,600 seats and only cost less than $30m to build! It's criminal how much is spent on stadiums these days.

The Nix have played regular season matches in Christchurch four times before. The crowds then:
Old stadium - 19,279 and 14,108
Temp stadium - 9,671 and 8,545

Bumper crowd expected for Wellington Phoenix 'home' game in Christchurch

Under the agreement, the Phoenix will return to Christchurch in 2026 and 2027 when they hope to be playing at the new One New Zealand Te Kaha Stadium due to open in 2026.

Why does Christchurch have a new stadium?

Why does Christchurch have a new stadium?
Lancaster Park - the larger one was destroyed by the earthquake. Rugby League Park (this one) also had to have the stands demolished but was redone as a temporary stadium. The one being built now will cater for 30,000 for sport.

14,064 today. Excellent stuff. Shame about the result.

The new stadium will old 30,000. Might be a bit large for an A-League team. But could be doable if their own team can get 10k a match, much like Victory at AAMI these days.
