The Australian Championship Thread

The question I pose is - what about in WA where there's the top 4 cup, what happens there, are the premiers invited or the 'champions'?
So at the moment, only 1 club per state conference is eligible for the Championship, this should go to the league winner.

In regards to end of season knockout comps, this can be included in the future.

Hopefully the NPL champions league will return as a third tier end of season tournament to foster pro/rel between the championship and NPLs in the future. When this happens you can effectively have 2 clubs per state.

1st spot goes to league winner
2nd spot goes to a cup winner (2nd-5th in each state league play home and away knockout for the final slot)

Looking around the leagues these first few rounds, the crowds seems noticeably larger. Another crowd boost in the Campbelltown vs Metrostars match tonight too, they're kicking off their season weeks earlier, the warmer weather seems a winner.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Championship is a summer league. Using the CL this summer to go head to head with A-League to test the waters. Being a pro league (presumably) then linking up with A-League would be good to see.

South Melbourne chairman on the pod. I think this is the third time in as many days that I've heard the talk of A-League and Championship merging with their best teams. Where there's smoke, hey... Probably a few years away I guess.

I hate it as it gets us back to 1 national division and square one
p&r is unlikely to be sustainable in Australia without 2 national divisions in my opinion

Yeah if it's at the cost of an NST then I'm not for it. I'd rather they just expand A-League with Championship teams as much as they want and open up pro/rel all the way. If they merge, it sounds like another closed shop to anyone below.

Agree 100% ... I have heard this bandied around a fair bit these past 2 years..... Will be deeply disappointed if it pans out that the only growth we get in football for the next four years is 2-4 token wog clubs in the Aleague and no full pro/rel.....

2-4 token Wog clubs would still be an improvement and better than nothing! But agree the ultimate end goal should be a fully-connected pro-rel pyramid.

Not really mate... Sure it will be great for my club but its not helping anything further down the pyramid as you say.. The time for self interest is slowly dying. If the APL can't see the forest for the trees fair enough but the rest of football needs to be united NOT excluded.

Both David Cvetkovski (12) and Bill Papastergiadis (10-12) talk about clubs that are interested. If you can get to 14 teams in the ALM and the 12 in the Championship for the seasons starting in 2026 that would be ideal.

The knack then becomes how do you make the step up financially between NPL and the Championship and from the Championship to the ALM.

It does seem like FA is going all in on the Championship though and both Preston and South are heavily marketed ...

This just released last night ... "were every match means something" hahaha love it.
