The Australian Championship Thread

Whilst im not enthusiastic about this it will be interesting to see what kind of attendances this can pull in Oct-Dec away from competing against the full catalogue of winter footy codes and all our other football divisions. Realistically fixturing should be able to avoid clashes with A league games.

It starts the week before the A-League, so there will be an overlap with A-League as well as any potential Australia Cup games. Will be interesting to see if FA choose midweek or weekend scheduling. I reckon if they go midweek, the crowds will be on the lower side.

it will fail if it's midweek, games need to be on weekends.

I really can't see any merit based promotion being introduced. I reckon (at least for the foreseeable future) promotion will always be financial/requirements based. Merit might get a club in the conversation, but if they can't meet the requirements that the existing clubs have already met, then I can't see promotion occurring. Not saying I'm agree with that, just saying that's how the FA operate. Maybe one day, but not anytime soon.
makes sense - but I expect there would be merit based P/R probably like 5 years off, or something like that.

These clubs were already at the top level. Why was nobody willing to step in and save the league and clubs?
Thats a damn good question..... One day they had a league to play in and the next day they didnt.... I wonder what the driving force behind it all was?

Do you think ANY franchises would survive for 20 years if they couldn't play football fro a season and half? Would anyone step up to save someone else's investment?

There will never be purely merit based promotion. There will always be other requirements like venue suitability and especially financial requirements. This will especially be the case if the proper NST is a fully professional league as per the original EOI/RFP spec.

Can you show me these hundreds of investors please ?

You already know i am in favour of two divisions. I only worry about the costs involved and whether the smaller clubs can sustain it. No more, no less.
Not sure why they dried up, youd have to ask Gallop ond the FFA what they did with the 30 odd aplicants they burned when WU and the Bulls got awarded franchises in 2018?

Isn’t this technically a franchise system too? 8 clubs have bought in a license for an exclusive position.
I think you may want to look into the differences between buying an independent business and running it how/where you want and signing up to be a franchisee for a Jims Mowing or a McDonalds mate..... Its not hard to udnerstand.

But isn’t this just marketing 101 spin? Market it as the anti to the other perception of the A-league. I am Pro to both of course but these quotes are just marketing gimmicks.

By definition, haven’t the 8 clubs become a franchise of this exclusive spot in the leagues? Why is that a bad thing though?
If the Championship doesnt evolve past this format for the first season then yes, I guess in a way they are part of a super league ... Don't know about being franchises though, each club can and will operate independently of "head office" this is civilised football not the Aleague :)

Yes, these requirements are generally in place around the world. But is still primarily merit based.

If it's not eventually primarily merit based, then there is no point.

No matter how we spin it, for the time being, it’s a glorified post season tournament for NPL clubs to appease these ethnic clubs.

I actually feel for the players, and have a few mates who have already sign on with a couple of Victorian teams, year round football with literally no break. Say South Melbourne make the grand final of the NPLVic, the players will be exhausted by the time this comp come around.

Hopefully within a couple of years it can turn in a full home and away season with at least 20 games.

Why dont we just put the best/most capable 10 clubs in. If it’s 5 from VIC and 5 from NSW, so be it, grow from there.

No team from WA has the resources to compete at this stage so it makes sense no sense having one team in.
Shit poor Wollongong would be a little surprised to be branded "effnikz"

As for feeling "sorry" for players playing an extra 12 weeks.... bahahahahahahah sure thing champ no worries Im sure they hate the extra pay and the chance to actually pursue what they love as a living..... ffs now Ive heard everything....

I thought that this was being worked on under the auspices of the club licensing agreements?

The way it was explained to me ... more than a year ago now, was that clubs would need to fulfil certain criteria to be granted a "pro" license and indicate their willingness and financial ability to be promoted at seasons start... and THEN of course qualify for promotion on the pitch .... a more stringent form of what happens in NPL now....

Correct, that would be my understanding as well, I probably could have worded it better.

The more I read the FA announcement the more I ten d to think there is some serious undercurrent of mudslinging against the APL here...

I means its pretty much a manifesto AGAINST what the APL stands for....

What the Australian Championship Stands For

Authenticity
: Celebrating local clubs, iconic grounds, and historic rivalries.

Discovery: Unveiling new talent and rising stars from across the country.

Connection: Bridging state competitions, professional pathways, and grassroots football.

Pride & Belonging: Uniting fans, players, and communities through football’s universal appeal

and also:

This unique structure ensures the Australian Championship remains inclusive, aspirational, and representative of the national football landscape. ...

hey, this is all 101# marketing spin as poster MP says hahaha.
Maybe so - your right though a massive NPL/grass roots "mantra" nice call to arms uptake, inspirational.
This should be plastered around every single ground.
