A-league attendances 24/25

we have some winter games these days that overlap with nrl and afl. I'd be curious if attendances show a drop these days (and also if the big bash/cricket season causes a similar drop)

Don't forget the alignment FA want with the Asian calendar. And most of Europe.

We don't mate. We did during COVID, and one Grand Final in the first week of winter, but that's it.

Early days of the league we kicked off in August. That's what we should be doing now like the rest of Asia and Europe.

We don't mate. We did during COVID, and one Grand Final in the first week of winter, but that's it.

Early days of the league we kicked off in August. That's what we should be doing now like the rest of Asia and Europe.

but the back end of the season does overlap with the a league right?

Yeah just assuming the objection to winter football is the competition with other codes. If that's the case u should see that in crowd figures and attendances in March through to may.

Unless my assumption is wrong and people are worried about the cold?
 
TBH I think we are well and truly past the "clear air" concept now and the smart move would be back to winter season. I doubt it would do much to attendances. But of course its TV that calls the shots, and they want the content for summer, even if they don't value the content. For Ten and any other network, football is summer filler - cheap builder's bog to fill a content hole. As we have seen there is ZERO interest at Ten in growing the game.

Personally I reckon the attendances would be pretty similar in Winter. Some people would drop off, but others would jump on. Would likely vary from club to club. I agree, the concept of 'clean air' is pretty much null and void these days. The biggest driver of eyeballs now is the search engine and social media algorithms. The concept of mainstream and broad appeal is not what it used to be. Everything is a niche interest now. People will watch/attend whatever they are interested in. A-League attendances haven't dropped, but rather they have settled to where they probably should be now that it's no longer shiny and new. For example early MV attendance numbers (pre AAMI) were heavily inflated due to the abundance of free tickets. Before AAMI, I went to nearly every game without paying a cent. FTA TV is quickly becoming a ghost town. Even a really successful show isn't rating anywhere near what it did 20 years ago. It used to be if a show was in a prime time slot and didn't break 1M in ratings it would get dumped to a later time slot or canned altogether. Now 1M is considered a really good result.

TBH it would open up a bunch of timeslots during the day for Saturday and Sunday. Starting with a NZ game and ending in the west. Night time games would probably be much rarer which may be a problem for the FTA broadcaster.
 
What about availability of stadiums during the winter season? I know AAMI park gets a bit chopped up by NRL and even worse when they do other entertainment activities there. I have no idea about NSW or Qld.

wouldn't that already be an issue come march-may?
 
Way too many vested interests to keep it as is for anything to change, from stadium deals to fill quotas, to tv fillers, to fear of the unknown, all of which seem to play their part...
what shouldve been the pre req for teams was football only boutique stadiums across the board and most of us have long said so.... allowing for "golden tickets" in the long run if your crowds went beyond the norm and even bigger revenues! More money staying with the clubs and the small crowds wouldnt matter ......and let them keep their aami for rugby etc and see how they sustain it with only half a year usage if they have an issue with the system...either way it looks empty even in the local franchise derbies these days!

Yeah ground logistics is probably a pain. I'm curious if there is a dip in crowds and ratings tho
 
Ofcourse there will be dip in crowds due to the many more in melb then syd bris who are supporters of the other codes.
I see this is good it draws a line in the sand for our game.
We then see who are the true game devotee of the apl.
As for grounds yep those who are locked in to those over sized stands used by the other codes surface will be effected to a degree and fixture dates.
 
I'm curious. How many on here also actively follow an AFL and/or NRL team? I'm defining "actively follow" as someone who is either a member or attends at least half of the home games and watches regularly on TV. Part two of the question is if both your teams were playing on the same day which do you choose?
Me personally, I don't follow any AFL or NRL teams. I go to MV games with three other mates, none of which actively follow (as defined above) an AFL or NRL team. I also have a few mates who are MC members. One of them actively follows Hawks but is not a member.

Being Sydney re NRL.
I only keep tabs on the scores and whats going on, haven't been to a game for 20yrs at least for eg and IF I did it was only because nothign else was on, have never been a active goer to games in my life.
Football runs my/our life.
Obviously have utterly no interest in afl.
My sense's over the years on the forum there is more afl fans from the south that would hedge their bets where they go.
