Are he’s tactics not working compared to say someone like Morgan’s tactics in the u20s?
Well the u20s have converted their chances well. I think his teams show signs of frustration

Vidmars lack of club coaching means he has textbook knowledge of coaching. So handling mental prep maybe a weakness. I'm not a fan of putting rookie coaches in these roles, it worked with Morgan who eventually came very good the last 3 tournaments, but I'd rather have a coach get experience in club football first

I always felt the u23 side is equivalent to a national reserves or B team, players that are on the cusp of national team or the next cohort ready to make the jump so they need a coach that can relate to their level but I don’t think Vidmar has much if any senior coaching experience which makes the appointment more baffling.

If anything we got lucky with Morgan too

Sheinflug had won awards as a club coach when he took over, ange coached at south melbourne

The powers that be no longer value youth tournaments enough to have an experienced coach in contrast to our rivals

My memory of the Ange appointment was the FA had no money and two coaching positions to fill. Socceroos and under 23s. Farina just won the nsl with Brisbane so was given head coach, Ange given 23s. I wouldn't necessarily say the experience was the thing that got him the job, more the lack of money.

Alternate timeline. Farina doesn't win the league, Ange given socceroos at the start of the golden generation.

We don't need a mind blowing coach, just one that has tested themselves beyond textbook knoweldge
The contrast is quite large, I wonder if we have the quality of coaches coming through unlike the playing talent we have?

Our bench might be shallow having only 11 pro teams. The nst will give more opportunities to coaches. We should then try and poach promising a league or nst coaches for u23

I have no idea how Vidmar managed to escape the sack after the last tournament failure. He is so out of his depth.
It's the boys club at work. Vidmar is completely incompetent - he demonstrated that when he left our Nestory & then put the blame on him. Then proceeded to completely fuck up the u23 Asian Cup/ Olympic qualification. Now he's picking his nephew over players like Leonard, who have played nearly every minute this season?!!

Agree with all of this. Although the Leonard criticism isn't fair. There seems a policy across all the youth teams to select players within their age groups. This puts Leonard with the U17s. They don't jump them up even when they're good enough. I think it'd be fair to criticise that policy but I doubt that's Vidmars call.

The problem with this, if it's an actual thing, is that Leonard wasn't picked for ANY team - he missed out on the u17, u20 & u23 squads which is ridiculous considering how well he's played. Does he miss the age cutoff for the u17 Asian Cup?

Fair enough. No ones said it anywhere but the selections seem to fit into those age groups, so that's my assumption. I'd assume if Leonard was too old for the U17s he'd be in the U20s. He should have been picked so it's mistske somewhere. Or perhaps there was some other reason for the omission we don't know?

Well he is too old for the U17's. It's simple, it's 2008-2010 born players. There's definitely another reason he didn't go. Maybe he denied due to him not losing his starting spot or maybe they thought they shouldn't disrupt him especially when we have suitable replacements or if he wasn't in line to get much game-time over Esposito and Vidmar then taking him would probably hinder him. Maybe the club rejected the request, who knows? Regardless he'll probably be in the U20 World Cup squad.

So he'd fit into the U21's then the way these squads seem to be selected. The question for me is why he wasn't selected by Morgan then. We went with Esposito, Kikianis, Herrington and someone else. I feel there must have been a reason he wasn't selected for that squad.

I wouldn't think it is any type of oversight. Everyone involved in Aus football would know about him. Probably just too old for 17s, too young for 21s. I imagine over the next couple of years he will be involved in the setup
