Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

This is interesting from Spain

not sure how I feel about a powerhouse caplocking young dual nationals.....having said that we should do it

Fifa needs to protect smaller nations

one we really need to lock down is scicluna when returns. Statistically the best u21 mid in a league history i suspect

Close to big 5 level defender already though needs to improve on the ball. Malta's senior team are looking to caplock him

Triantis, Robertson, Toure and Volpato should be getting call ups based on form and squad needs. There are a few others there abouts I'd strategically bring in for depth or sub appearances. Chipperfield and Okon-Engstler.

Yeah scicluna when he recovers would be a strategic call up. Midfield destroyer

While players like Patrick Yazbek, Marcus Younis, and Andrew Nabbout chose not to represent Lebanon, a new wave of Aussie-Lebanese talent is stepping up: Austin Ayoubi, Micheal Ghossaini, Khoder Kaddour, and Ramy Najjarine will soon play for the Cedars.

In hindsight, I was a bit critic of Arnie, but one area where he did excel was in man management and proactively courting dual nationals. Popovic seems to be backward in both regards, which concerns me greatly. Let's not forget that we have Souttar and Boyle because Arnie got off his ass and flew to the UK and met with them both to sell his vision for the Socceroos and to convince them to choose Australia. Does anyone now question the passion for the jersey of those players because we had to make that direct approach to them? A quick snapshot from Copilot says:

Graham Arnold used a personal and strategic approach to convince both Martin Boyle and Harry Souttar to play for Australia.

Martin Boyle
Arnold traveled to Edinburgh to meet with Boyle in person. This direct approach, combined with Arnold's vision for the Socceroos, played a significant role in convincing Boyle. Boyle appreciated Arnold's effort and credited him for making the journey to see him. Arnold's pitch highlighted the opportunities and the positive environment within the Australian national team, which ultimately persuaded Boyle to switch allegiances.

Harry Souttar
For Souttar, Arnold emphasized the consistent success of the Socceroos in qualifying for major tournaments, contrasting it with Scotland's less successful record. This pragmatic approach, along with the opportunity to play in World Cups, was appealing to Souttar. Arnold's confidence in Souttar's abilities and the promise of a significant role in the team also helped secure his commitment.

Whilst Totti seemed to convince Volpato otherwise, Arnie also travelled to Italy to watch him play and discuss his role in the Socceroos (https://www.ftbl.com.au/news/arnie-coup-volpato-ditches-italy-to-join-socceroos-fold-601324) and he also flew to the UK to meet with Alex Robertson to help secure him for the Socceroos (only for bad decisions later on to have seemingly changed things).

Part of Popovic's role, or at the very least, the assistant coaches, should be to be reaching out to dual nationals and travelling to watch them play and meet with them in person. Not just dual nationals, but all players really. But especially dual nationals! Is this happening? Why is Popovic not proactively meeting with Volpato, Robertson, Triantis, Chipperfield, Skoko et al? He can't even pick up the phone to have a conversation with Segecic about his non selection, which seems to be leaving him feeling disillusioned now too. It really isn't that hard, and should be an expectation of the role to be developing relationships with these players and building bridges where we need to. Right now it feels like Popovic is just being stubborn and pig-headed with this ridiculous line of not diminishing the jersey. Let's see how well that goes when Greece pinch Triantis, Croatia pinch Segecic and Italy pinch Volpato. If those countries want those players in their stable, they're going to be moving heaven and earth to act on it to make sure of it, not naively waiting by the phone for the players to reach out and ask to pretty please play for them. The Volpato situation could potentially change pretty quickly if we'd show some initiative, stop sitting on our hands, reach out to the kid, and do everything that we can to convince him that his future is with Australia.

A big difference is the talent coming through.

Also, we were short of cattle when Arnie approached Souttar and Boyle. We have a lot more cattle coming though now.

There is so much more quantity of quality in the Aus u23s and younger age cohorts. They have had access to high quality UEFA powerhouse coaching from 10 onwards. It shows.

There may be more talent coming through but we're not exactly Brazil, so I'd argue that until the day that we are, we need to be taking every step possible to secure promising and talented dual nationals. In fact, even the best of the best are always on the lookout for dual nationals that can further add to their options. I just don't get the double standard. We're happy for Arnie to woo Boyle and Souttar and no-one could dispute that those boys bleed green and gold despite their Scottish background and needing to be convinced to play for us, but people take exception to the idea of Popa wooing Volpato, Robertson and Triantis.

I think there might be disagreement about wording. Depends what you mean by 'woo'.
By all means have conversations with guys. Keep communication open. Maybe some won't like this but I think most think it reasonable.

Bad ideas:
  • Publicly talking about it. Fans want to know, media will ask. Just say they're not available at this stage so could not be considered. Don't pick them for a squad in the hope they will say yes.
  • Promises or expectations of any kind regarding selection, eg Robertson getting upset about not getting minutes in the friendly window. Sometimes you don't get picked, go back and play better.
  • Phone calls to players who have never played for us to explain why they were left out. People were upset about Segacic. He has a decent year, still not a starter at his club. No one getting upset Archie Goodwin didn't get a call, same number of goals, young player.
  • Picking players or giving them minutes to 'lock them in'. If they would have been picked or got minutes anyway, great. If not, there shouldn't be special circumstances. Eg Triantis (he hasn't spat the dummy from all reports, despite the hyperventilating here) could have played because he earned it, is a good player and if the match warranted it. Not because we want to tie him down.
  • I don't mind Popa (or someone involved) having another chat to Robertson or Volpato as the new manager. But it's a follow up check in, after that ball is in their court.
Short version. Don't be desperate, make selection an achievement not an affirmative action pick. You don't get anywhere constantly chasing / being nice to the girl if she doesn't reciprocate, she just dates the other guy anyway and you hate yourself.

Robertson, Volpato, Irankunda, Milanovic, Botic, Segacic & Triantis all warranted selection over some picked. It may be more about team dynamics this time around. Most of this squad have played numerous times together & know how everyone plays, so Popovic may have just wanted the stability of players he knows. Once we qualify he can start experimenting & bring in players who have been overlooked, in friendlies leading up to the WC

I really hope so. He needs to.
