I've heard Trump say many positive things about Christian moral values, and him acknowledging God and Jesus Christ - although I haven't so far heard him express the view that Salvation cannot be obtained by works, but by faith-leading-to-works.

A conservative-evangelical Christian believes there is a difference between (1) living in a country or culture that has Christian values, and living by those values, versus (2) responding in obedience and faith to the gospel of Jesus Christ by faith (not by works), so as you be born-again by a supernatural action of God on the believer i.e. precise definition of "a Christian".

No person is in a position to definitely say whether someone else is "a Christian" according to that precise definition.

Many people go through the motions of being a Christian. Only God knows the heart and spirit of a person.

Outwardly a person who has become a Christian would have external "fruit" that correlates with the internal change - but those also can be mimicked, rather than being genuine.

Hence, the general understanding is that no one can really tell if a person is a "true Christian" versus "someone who follows Christian cultural practices".

Thus, no one can definitely say if Donald Trump is a "true Christian" - although one can test Trump's actions with reference to the Christian gospel.

Jesus told a parable of the wheat and tares (Matthew 13:24-30,36-43).

Ultimately no one really knows the true heart of any other person. You don't know the true heart of even family members or close friends. Only God sees the heart.
