FIFA Club World Cup 2025

Benfica vs Boca was interesting. I was a neutral until just before halftime when the Boca players lost their heads and started behaving like clowns to the referee. Glad Benfica got the equaliser.

The individual player announcements are cringe AF. I was trying to work out why it was taking so long for the players to take the field until I realized that was happening.

‘At forward, from the University of AIS, 6’3 185 pounds, Mark Viduka’

hahaha I noticed that too....

My only objection to it is the qualification process... More than happy for this as a tournament and agree with most that its great to see clubs big and small around the world match up......
Little things will have to be tweaked I agree.

Another issue is the clash with international tournaments but that is for a broader discussion about the FIFA and confed calendar.

I like the concept of finding the best club in the world but it really needs to be a representation of that every tournament...

Every confederation has an existing mechanism in place to declare a champion... whats wrong with the old formats of time gone buy? It just seems like a money grab, JUST for the sake of a money grab... And before anyone adds, I would love a Sth American or African or even Asian team to win it....

I think it's a way to appease the Super League wankers. Everything is a money grab. People seem to think they can stop the momentum but at this stage we will soon have the first billion dollar player. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens in 10 years time.

There is only so many days in a year and there is only so much one can spend on 11 players. We are not yet at that apex. Nowhere near it.

Its certainly under attack from the Yanks at the moment... As much as I hate to say it, I hope next years world cup is a flop so they can finally abandon the sport altogether and leave it to the rest of us.

if there are only 7 teams it is a mickey mouse tournament

the confederations cup had the winner of each confederations competition but was mickey mouse compared to the actual world cup because without enough teams no one takes it seriously

I think you hit the money ball and clogging up the calendar.
Ifantino’s way of putting out more prize money and keeping the bastards honest so to speak but also lining his pockets as well.
Sooner or later the RM’s etc will revolt again.

The Confederations Cup was always supposed to be a mickey mouse tournament though - was always determined as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup - and it was perfectly organised and scheduled as such.

right but that still supports my point

if you want to deliberately make a mickey mouse tournament have an 8 team tournament

Boca vs Benfica was a bit blood and thunder. I only watched for 20 mins and saw about 5 yellows and one red. And lots of arsing around on the touchline from officials, subs, trainers etc.
I saw playing for Seattle that winger Kent who was always playing for Rangers against Ange's Celtic a couple of years ago.

ashton passionate vibrant blood as we know, sometimes its way OTT and not the game we are used to but norm for those parts of the world.
I enjoy the devoted commitment but yer some of the play acting I like the ol days of when you could really give it back haha

So River showed up Urawa on the scoreline.
Closer game than the score shows.
Kudos to Brazils Fluminense gainng the draw vs Dortmond - that was a good result by them.

Given the match/workload of a successful club (usually), makes perfect sense to make this a mickey mouse tournament.

Assuming a player could play in every (official) match they could through the season - let's use the Premier League as an example, they would be playing:
  • 38 x League games
  • 6x FA Cup games (Assuming no replays)
  • 6x EFL Cup games (teams competing in UEFA competitions are given a second round bye)
  • 17x UEFA Champions League matches (if finishing outside the top 8 of the League Phase and going on to the final, like PSG did this season)
  • 1x UEFA Super Cup
  • 1x FA Community Shield
  • 10x Internationals (outside of FIFA World Cup/Continental tournaments)
Without even taking an offseason tournament into account, that's 79 games.

If we add the old 2000 format (2x groups of 4, with group winners playing off in the final), that's only 4 extra games to the workload, so 83 games. 84 if we want to make it exactly like the Confederations Cup with semi-finals.

Inter v Monterey 0-0.
Inter in dire post CL crushing hangover.
Impressed Sth African Mamelodi beat Ulsan good on them.

it only makes perfect sense to make it a mickey mouse tournament if european football is more important than international football and that is the premise I don't accept. The European monopoly on elite club football has turned south america into a clone of europe and its hurting the global status of the game

Yes, that's a fair point - which is why I personally am open to an expanded Club World Cup, but I don't think the way they've done this one perfectly fits it, and has made it a mickey mouse competition by being a bit too over saturated. A middle ground would be perfect (Somehow) - probably that 24 team format I floated, and maybe bi-annual instead of quadrennial.
