it was interesting seeing different figures treated differently by him and gorman. One head of soccer australia was portrayed as an anti ethnic villian by gorman and a visionary being resisted by corrupt special interests by warren!

I think learning more about the 74 campaign makes it so much more impressive what they achieved getting there!

After learning about warren im pretty convinced he would have been happy with just about every decision made by the fa the last 2 decades, apart from the club identity policy and might have grumbled about lack of youth development.

He seems to view the lack of popularity as the thing holding the sport back and views the usa as a big source of inspiration for how to crack the problem.
I read it shortly after it came out. Terrific read at the time.

Agree Johnny W would have been pretty happy with the football direction in Aus since his passing.

Nearly finished Mr Cleansheets.

Terrific read for all members of this forum!

I'll raise the fictitious elements in the Off Topic football thread. I think Eric Judd goes from state league div 4 in NSW to English Conference. Conference level is the precursor to League 2. It keeps ramming home what we are missing here without a promo/releg system.

to be honest my feelings have been pretty mixed. The good things havent been enough to keep pace with the rate of how much football globally is improving

Good: moving to asia, more full time professional clubs at the top domestic level, getting time slots on free to air, improved coaching education and a change in culture to encourage more deck football, rise of the matildas

Bad: no academies for the first 10 years of the a league (still many clubs dont really have academies), no nyl for the majority of the time the a league has been around, far fewer professional pathways, alienation of the most passionate fans first with the marginalization of migrant communities then with the war on active support, poor governmence model that gives little voice to the grass roots (slightly bettet lately), lack of investment in grassroots resulting in just 1 percent of fa funds being spent on grass roots which contributes to our poor participation rate and poor infrastructure. Some of these issues are scheduled to be fixed mind you

I reckon JW would have hated that.
past news paper opinion pieces from warren suggest he would have hated the club identity policy. I also suspect he would have hated the war on actives

surprisingly craig foster was really anti-active support in the came from no where documentary

CF tends to be anti everything he didn't come up with himself.
he also bristled at the term "golden generation" to refer to a generation that didn't include him :D

miss his commentary though. Wasn't very professional but that was a feature not a bug :D

jealous of that! What was it like on the night
I cried with happiness at the birth of each of my children and at that night. It remains a night for the true believers of Australian football.

I was at the game at the MCG in 97 as well which was a gutting moment that made the 05 even sweeter. When Peter Hoare dies I'm going to piss on his grave.

Brilliant read @Mr Cleansheets
Big regret in my life is not discovering football earlier and being able to follow the rise of the roos beyond newspaper results. Yes I missed out on a lot of heartbreak, but also missed something truly special

I was there with my son and future son in law.I too was surprised at the booing of the Uruguayan national anthem but a couple of weeks later I was talking to a Uruguayan acquaintance and he said this rattled the South Americans as they had always regarded us as a not serious football nation and after the booing they realised the crowd and our team were up for it.Viduka's miss made me super anxious but Schwarzer and Aloisi did the job.The feeling of sheer joy when JA scored still hits me whenever I watch a replay of the penalty shootout.
