German referee Patrick Ittrich has proposed several bold rule changes to football:

1. Tactical Fouls: For a tactical foul in midfield, award a free kick 17 meters from goal. How often would players risk such fouls after that?

2. Simulation: If a player rolls on the floor three times and calls for medical attention, let the doctor assist—but make the player stay on the sidelines for three minutes. How quickly would they get back on their feet then?

3. Respecting Referees: A player who insults the referee should be sent off for 10 minutes to cool down. Let them cycle to warm up before returning. Football could take inspiration from handball here.

4. Dissent and Surrounding the Referee: When a referee is surrounded by 10 players after a decision, issue three red cards immediately. Playing 7 vs. 10?

Absolute no-brainer..which is precisely why FIFA won’t be giving it the green-light anytime soon(if ever)😔

Great story that!
One’d think that the FFA/APL would make use of anecdotes like that to attract more kids of Subcontinental backgrounds to ⚽️..but dare I suggest the preconception of “they’re only into 🏏” still holds too much sway in this country.

Some good German public broadcaster reports on referee Ittrich. NDR YouTube. Maybe also ZDF or Sportschau. Should work anywhere and have subtitles. Likeable guy.

Some of our clubs being globally recognised in the comments below as genocidal Nazi sympathisers. I have no idea about the politics behind this vote, but I'm assuming it's not a good look for us!

QPR win again and move to 13th in ECL....

Hopefully they can keep this up and give thenselves a chance to challenge for top 6.

Will be a stunning form reversal given they were dead last in the first few months of the season....

My 2c

1. I like in theory but I think it adds complexity to decisions (when/when not to use) and it's generally better to simplify.

2. Yep love that one. Make it 5 minutes on the sideline.

3. I don't mind it. I think a yellow or red works as well though.

4. Too heavy handed. The rule should be only the Captain can talk to the referee. The referee should never be rushed or have dissent. That should be yellow or red depending on context.

I like the top 3 rules, the bottom one not so much. I definitely agree that more needs to be done. What I'd like to see if hitting the players and club where it really hurts. For example, if you surround the referee in the way they do, then issue a yellow, but also match fee fine or 1 game suspension.

Simulation and if the physio comes on should definitely result in 5 minutes on the sideline, as well as a match fee fine/1 game suspension.

1. So a foul is breached near the sideline and its moved 17m from goal where ? in the middle or what ?
I think this cheat is swings and roundabouts, you hate it when its against you but luv it going your way.
IF its abused same offender twice yellow given.

2. Straight yellow imo.

3. yer OTT, imo the Gov bodies prior to season start set down new ruling to ALL Clubs, IF more than 2 players crowd the official yellows are handed out AND the Club is fined - just a quick thought.

and who is to decide what is and isn't simulation? Do we get Elon Musk to put a little chip inside players heads to read their minds???? I get kicked in the shins and my 3 year old niece gets kicked in the shins...a re we both expected to behave in the same way?

You're either injured or not. If you are get off. If you aren't get on with it. There are different ways you could approach that but that's my feelings towards it.

So youve never been winded momentarily, or knocked on your arse by a sliding tackle, taken a breather had the magic sponge and popped straight back up again ready to do battle??? C'mon man, its a slippery slope. I get that some players really take the piss, and it is a legitimate go to tactic for some clubs/nations but these rule changes, if implemented, are over-policing the game in my view.

As a rule I agree with you about messing with rules. This behaviour though gives me the shits and I'd be happy for a change. Give em' a minute to dust themselves off then send them to the sides for treatment. It's pretty obvious when its gamesmanship.

It shits me too (when its done by the opposing team of-course, my lads are saints ) but I really do think it is too hard to adjudicate on the pitch (Muz, Nic, any other refs chime in if Im off track) and any recourse to VAR is ONLY going to slow the game down more... I would be more pleased with a video review system AFTER the match has been played with potential fines dished out for clear and obvious time wasting....

Generally one of those moments where I'll keep an eye on how quick they recover on the sidelines, and make them wait a bit longer if they're very, very quick to their feet and itching to get back on.

No VAR. Should be on field refs call only. The whole point is to stop time wasting not slow it down more.

The pitch shouldn't be used for treatment and holding the game up. Unless their leg is broken or they are unconscious, drag them off the pitch and recommence the match immediately. I've said it before, it does my head in paying to watch a match that's stopped for a tired player to drink pickle juice.
