Promotion and Relegation is vital for Football in Australia

note from the openning comments ;

In this episode of Unleashed, Eric dives into the league’s ambitions, the impact on clubs and players, and whether this is the beginning of a true soccer revolution in the U.S. Buckle up—this could change everything.
If you watch the episode he mentions that last seasons USL final had more viewers than the MLS final did ..... Two tiny clubs (compared to MLS) no Messi or Suarez and still they managed a higher viewership??.... Interesting the USL has been given Division 1 status also so there are effectively two top leagues in USA now, with access to continental football ... I wonder if FA is watching this and wanting to do the same with the Championship?

interesting !
Re the FA, I'm sure JJ is watching but in the first place we know FIFA would prefer the proper Football model.
They have given sanction to these odd ball closed comps purely on the base's of circumstance the way I see it.

I haven't the time yet to listen to the link but read the openning lines, in time will do.

At this stage the two competitions aren’t aligned on a seasonal basis and are definitely not division one and two.
They will operate separately and independently until the A League sees the writing on the wall and understands that Australia is too small a market to have independently run competitions.
It will all come down to compromise.

A similar scenario with USL and MLS ... USL (all 3 divisons of it) will have pro rel between them starting in 2027 and playing Aug - June at the same time as Euro comps separate to MLS's broadcast dictated requirements ... there are many similarities to whats happening here I think.

As to whether the MLS or its baby version in Australia see the benefit of defying their investors by relinquishing control back to the gioverning body that remains to be seen .... I personally doubt the APL will want that to happen NOT that the FA will merge again just for the sake of it ... all depends on how successful the Championship and national NPLs are in the coming years?

been saying it for years that we can't keep having 2 separate football comps......
Sooner or later it will pop - more so due to the angst and differences that each other cause's conflict but added pressure, the governance, the players, pathways.
APL needs the other more than visa versa and IF they don't get enough ROI in the coming years what next ?
IF the Championship does get its legs running in the coming years that will apply pressure on the APL and more so IF they don't get a great new cash injection broadcast deal that will keep their whole model sustained for the next 3/5yrs....
Anyway its time to not even bother about what may or may not occur, its such crystal ball stuff here in Oz but at least a fuse has been lit for majority of the game and participants.

Would be embarrassing for us if the MLS gets pro/rel before we do, but it would also leave us with no more excuses. APL/FFA always used the "but MLS doesn't have it" to riggle out of any progress on the matter.
Progress is now being made, at least by FA, so pro/rel will happen below the A League. It’s just a matter of time before the APL realise that they can’t go it alone.

I dont think MLS will EVER have pro/rel mate, not unless they grow to 60 clubs which cover ALL the broadcast timezones.. Apple TV wont allow it. Not to mention the fact that current license are $500 mill US, in 4-5 years this will be at a billion a pop ..... just wild.

I did not realise that the Dutch pyramid is sort of closed shop as well.

Any other football mad places with a weird system?

Mexico completely closed like Australia but masked under "after financials get ready"

A lot of the benefits in p and r are in having p and r in the national divisions

A lot of the risks are in having p and r between the national tiers and regional tiers

So it's not crazy that u can be successful with an ad hoc pyramid

Singapore & Sri Lanka in our own confederation doesn't have P&R.

Neither does the US & Canada in North America.

I thought all that changed a few years ago and now amateur teams CAN get promotion?

As for Mexico ..... just watch Club de Cuervos on Netflix ... hahahaha they are hilarious.

The metrics will never stack up for the MLS.

Oh wait:

My uncle came from America to visit us bearing gifts years ago. All Americans must have gifts. Anyway, what's with the Americans, pro/ rel?...they got 30 teams in MLS so why not have a 2nd tier, they've got money.

Investment protection? However I doubt that majority of MLS owners are turning over a profit.
yes and no ... Owners in MLS are a little different... The land of Ultra capitalism does sport a little differently and MLS is run like a soviet style syndicate... Owners pay their half billion into the "kitty" and the league gives them a license to participate, they own nothing from their own club... revenue is shared so Messi in the league benefits ALL in the league...... Lenin and Marx would be so proud.
