Summer of Cricket thread

CA need to tie him to Aussie white ball cricket otherwise he will lost to us in the plethora of T20 global franchises. Owen is better than a slogger DC.
Maxwell is worth $10 million playing a lot of white ball cricket.

Yet now I think he really regrets his absence from Test cricket, as he nears the end of his cricket career.

Two tough drops there - for Carey - and Labu - who a well struck shot hit on body.

Luck going SL’s way at 3-81.

Just can’t believe Siddle at age 40?
The old trouper. Is still accurate but that deck made him look better than he is these days.

The Blues have probably the weakest attack without the massive experience of Tremain and Bird. Hanno Jacobs impressed me tho. Tall with a whippy action.

Good to hear, Richie.

How much effort does the whippy action take?

Left the cricket for a while.

SL scored a lot of runs in that period.Whereas Smith has captained the side very well earlier in the second innings and in the first innings, he has made a big mistake not bowling Webster's off spin earlier.

I've seen both Head and Webster now both bowl finger spin quite a lot on Bellerive, usually a tough wicket to extract spin, in the Shield. I was surprised how much turn Head was getting out to the pitch, but Webster was Tassie's specialist spinner for a while, bowling on an unresponsive pitch at Bellerive. As anyone saw at the end, Webster is so tall, his release point is probably a metre higher than the other Aussie finger spinners. His line and length were good too - extracting almost as much turn and more bounce than Matt K and Lyon..

Slug extracted a lot of spin and bounce, with nearly 2 wickets in 2 successive balls. He should have been bowled a lot more, bowling off spin in both innings, and in the First Test in Galle. He took 1 wicket in 2 overs!

The other massive mistake in hindsight was selecting Cooper Connolly. He has looked innocuous with the ball, and looks ill-disciplined and inexperienced with the bat - mainly boasting a white ball CV. 4 Shield games are far too few to appraise a cricketer as suitable for Test cricket.

Conversely, Murphy is still a young player, and bowled plenty of good balls in the First SL Test in Galle. Murphy has also bowled a lot of Shield overs on the tough Junction Oval.

To bowl an all rounder left arm finger spinner, Connolly, who also bats, without a FC wicket to his name after only 4 Shield games, is thumbing the nose at the Shield, or FC red ball cricket (English County cricket).

If Smith had selected Murphy instead of Connolly, ( who else was involved Bailey, McDonald?) and bowled Webster more, the Test would be over now. Lyon and Kuhnemann have had a big workload in the heat and humidity. Their fingers must be sore too. Murphy and Slug would have alleviated their workload.

Smith is relying too much on some players' skills who have been in the team a long time. Labu has failed for 3 years in succession as a batter. That Head extracted the turn he did, showed how much the wicket is turning. Murphy would have been the better option. Aus only went into this Test with three specialist bowlers.

Did Starc bowl enough overs? He is supposedly the most successful visiting fast bowler ever in SL.

Inglis must be an excellent slipper too, having been a keeper.

Kuhnemann now has 16 wickets for the SL series in less than 4 innings! Yet Queensland selectors prefer Swepson. Matt K had to move to Tas to get a Shield game!

Lyon is now 7th on all time highest number of wickets in world cricket with 552 or 553 wickets!

Fantastic achievement, particularly having to bowl so much on Aus wickets, where most visiting spinners struggle to take wickets.

I’m pretty blown out with how well keepers Inglis in the First Test, and Carey in Second Test, have used their feet so well against SL spinners on turning wickets.

Mate that is the secret to playing a good spinner. You attack him and it throws him off his bowling plan. Dont let him settle and he will never dominate you. Steve Smith is our best player of spin because he is our best problem solver. Same as with pace.

Josh Philippe is another terrific destroyer of a well planned spin attack. He and Inglis are very similar. I do think tho Philippe is the superior defender, as you also need a solid defense to be a good spin player. The best will always judge the length better than others and if tossed up will meet the ball with an an angled bat to smother the spin. Gotta say super quick footwork then a lofted drive over the bowlers head excites me like few other cricket strokes. Philippe does it to perfection, Inglis and Carey are a close second.

Has the man from Snug put up his hand to bowl his offies? Feel if the case he'd have bowled before Travis Head. In fact Smithy has hardly used him for his medium pace

He has longevity on his side. Played his first of 135 Tests way back in 2011 DC. You are better at maths than me, work out precisely how many wickets per Test. Reckon a majority of his Aussie wickets were on last day spinning tracks with lotsa help from bowlers foot marks. He is moderate on first, second, even third day pitches, unless on spin friendly Asian pitches.

DC you remember fellow off spinners Ashley Mallet and Bruce Yardley, well betting had either of them played same # of Tests as Nathan Lyon in same era that they'd too be looking at 550 Test wickets. All three had similar ability imo, just that Rowdy and Roo were only given a fraction of Tests that were given to Lyon.

Have seen three O'Connor overs and yet to see one swing. Looks perfect swinging conditions too and this kid does have swing ability..

Impressive bowling by Tassie all round tyro, 18 yo O’Connor!

Handscomb is hitting the ball right in the middle of the bat, after Neil- Smith took a screamer in slips to dismiss his predecessor.

Vic 2-45.
