Tasmania FC thread

Hobart council are scum. Australia Cup preliminary cancelled, literally due to them getting in dog walkers.

I knew our game was held in lower prestige than rugby league and afl by the powers to be
I'm not even surprised if we are ranked lower than 2nd tier sports like rugby
having said that even I'm surprised we are below dog walking

Update from South Hobart:

We continue to position a TASMANIAN TEAM for Foundation Club status in a home and away
stand alone competition. The October Football Australia media release identified and
recognised the achievement of South Hobart FC as one of six additional clubs that have passed
the technical elements of the NST RFP process but were unable to meet the mandatory
financial requirements to play in a standalone NST home and away league competition prior to
the deadline of June 2024.

Next steps in 2025
Football Australia has committed to a third NST Request for Proposal selection
process (anticipated in the coming weeks), with the intention this process will identify
additional foundation clubs, including “predominantly from underrepresented states”.
Ahead of this process commencing, we are meeting with key stakeholders to provide
an update on the AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP and to position the bid for a
TASMANAN TEAM. Football Australia representatives are participating in these
meetings.

South Hobart FC continues to engage with Football Australia, the NST Foundation
Clubs, Tasmanian clubs and Junior Soccer Associations, and other key stakeholders
(including our Member Federation, Football Tasmania) to position for a TASMANIAN
TEAM to play on the national stage, in our most played sport.

During every stage of our work related to the NST, and in each of our written submissions,
we have highlighted our explicit interest, support and commitment to a future FA women’s
national second tier competition (i.e. positioned between existing national ‘A-League W’,
and the existing state and territory level competitions (the WSL Women’s Super
Leagues).

Sounds promising ... Im down in Hobart next week or the week after and Ill try and swing around to the club and see whats their ground is looking like these days. Interesting that they may be considered an additional foundation club, would this change Octobers line up I wonder?

The only logical play for here would be that WU is relocated to Tasmania and dropped to Second tier for h&a under the Tasmania banner (provided we get there).. if it succeeds in that tier then it can be viewed along with the other Championship sides on merrit to go up via promotion.

Thats one fancy dog walkers park pledge! Im sure should the budget for the "stadium" blow out more than the billion it already is, they can always tap into this "pledge" also!
I would not bet on the Hobart AFL stadium going ahead. Launceston has had a heap of money poured into it. Labor originally opposed it but supported in this election. Greens and the newly elected independents oppose it. It is likely that the Libs will get to 16 and Labor to 10. Meaning the cross bench could get to 9 (with 1 conservative independent possible).

Do not dismiss that there may be a new premier and depending on the cross bench and Labor it could even be a Green premier. The fate of the stadium may well be determined by the premier discussions.

To be honest the Hobart stadium for 23,000 stadium with a roof in Hobart is ludicrous. Apart from the enormous cost a roof is not needed. Hobart has the least rainfall of any capital. A Hobart based AFL team should want a roofless stadium so that the 'northerners' can experience the briskness of a Hobart's winter day (or night).

York Park in Launceston has had a heap of money put towards it for Hawthorn to play a few games. It is currently undergoing an upgrade of a further $130 million that will increase the capacity to 19,000.

To put the $350,000 for football in perspective that is half the interest payment on the current debt (wholly accumulated under the Liberal government) and that is before spending what looks to be over $1 billion on top of Federal an AFL contributions for the stadium.

Basketball (with a lot lower participation) got around 39 times the money than the $350,000 for football while consigning the 'home of football' to the other side of the river.

This is a very poor outcome for football!!!

I've been involved in the Tas election campaign with the union movement.

The Libs could be unlikely to form government. In the previous election there were 3 fickle Independents elected in the Jackie Lambie Network that formed a coalition with the Libs. They've all lost their seats. Other than a Shooters, Fishers and Farmers candidate, all the other likely elected Independents are progressive, supposedly left of centre.

The Libs, even if they achieve 16 seats could be unlikely to nail down an Independent to govern with them. All, apart from David O'Byrne, former Labor leader, are anti- stadium.

The Parl Lab Party flipped on the stadium , after being anti- stadium. However, the Parl Wing doesn't reflect the values of the party rank and file.

Right wing member, Dean Winter, was elected, by the Parl Lab Party, because the Left was too disorganised to get a candidate up as a contestant. It would have meant the 1800 member rank and file would have been involved in voting for the leader. So Winter has low support amongst Labor rank and file, as he represents only 110 members of the Labor Right.

Winter is pro-stadium, but now realises he has nowhere to go. There is a chance he will be displaced as leader, by a candidate who may be elected by the skin of her teeth. She has broad based rank and file support too.

Only 41% of Tasmanians support the stadium in its present manifestation. A number of Labor members, rank and file, and MPs, have campaigned against it in previous elections.

There is a likelihood of a 9 person Labor, 5 member Greens and 4 Independents as government - with most of the 4 Independents and all of the Greens being anti-stadium.

Interesting post

Labour have gotten 10 seats Libs have 14 seats. Labour joins with greens, the guy that owns the deli & the hairdresser, they may well form a minority gov. There goes the Tasmanian home of football funding.
was labour, greens, or liberals the most friendly to home of football?

Thanks Decentric.
I figured that Winter would be gone simply because the party wasn't ready for an election and that was his call. Which was a pretty bad one.

The more progressive parties and individuals tend to be aware of football.

One other theme which is arising in discussion, is that football may be the biggest participant sport, but jogging, swimming, cycling, yoga, Pilates, may be 3- 5 times more popular as participation level pastimes than team sport.

Well, colour me shocked.
