Tasmania FC thread

The AFL has a Gold Coast team and they don't attract crowds, basketball use to have teams there but they folded due to lack of support. The NRL have the Titans located up there and they had to be propped up by the NRL twice for several years. They now are stable because of deep pocket investors and thsi decade they have grown their average home attendance from 4k to 15k (round numbers).

So basically, the GC is where normal sports go to die. Surfing and golf are doing well though.
Interesting?

IMO the Hobart mainstream media gave virtually no coverage to the the Western United games games held in Hobart.

If there was a regular Hobart AL team and a regular club presence, with a lot more local people involved, I think there would be week in and week out supporters, plus members. I would definitely take on a season membership.

However, I'm not sure why Gold Coast ( probably Palmer's pernicious influence); Western U , with its distinct connection to the Geelong area; and Macarthur, with its south Sydney location; have drawn such disappointing crowds?

One scenario to look at is Auckland. Nobody turned up to watch the Kingz, yet the Ausckland club this season is drawing huge crowds. Why?

I used to have inside contacts within FFA. Not now. Gallop was a hair's breadth away from awarding the AL licence to the Belteky/Stamoulis Tasmanian bid. Fox Sport lobbied hard to stop it! Then Fox pulled out of football altogether shortly after!
I missed this whole bidding process at the time. Just been reading about that Belteky/Stamoulis Tasmanian bid. Sounds like FFA were hungry for the broadcast money and wanted to appease Foxtel by dumping the Tassie bid quickly.

The bid was good though. It had support from local and state government, and had meetings with Turnbull to redevelop North Hobart Oval into a pitch! Millions in sponsorship was already lined up. That bid, as with the newest NST bid, was run by South Hobart FC.

Here's how North Hobart Stadium could've looked, with Hindmarsh over the top. Fits like a glove. In a prime location. What a disappointing loss for football:

I'm drooling over this possible redeveloped North Hobart!

When ever we watch AL games at North Hobart, there are no good vantage points to watch football on a really good playing surface ATM!

I’m still playing in the old leagues with a team mate who used to work in the Lowy AL/FFA tenure.
He quoted all they were interested in was getting the new owners initial license sugar hit more than anything else !
Those who they got paying more despite not the right area proves this.

Makes sense, especially after the rumours/reports that Canberra's initial bidders that went up against Western United/Macarthur (you know, the secret billionaires) were apparently asked by FFA to put their money into Sydney/Melbourne instead...

Tasmania makes so much sense ... the Maq Point site was originally supposed to be a soccer stadium as well. I reckon they can put a 10k stadium near the TCA ground for 10% of the price of that new AFL stadium as well

Just remember - stadium builds have tripled in the last 6 years - at least according to the ACT Government…

A chat about pro/rel in Tassie. I agree with most of this, his regional playoff and final playoff is the right idea. Two thing's I'd change: make all the playoffs two legs; and you still need facility standards to get promoted, or maybe promote the winner and give them two\three years to get their facilities up to scratch or else they get forced relegated. That might be a more successful way of getting funding from councils.

Good old, Rhodesy!

Did my C licence with him.

Thanks for posting, HG.

Over the top black tradie Utes also.

5 pages in and I'll give it a read. I find not having a Tasmanian team around 7 years was a big mistake. Green and gold in colour and surely their crowds can't be worse than WU and Macarthur?
Sure, but who pays? The Bulls and WU are investments in potential. There is no potential in Tasmania. The state is losing population. There is no industry. There is no money apart from David Walsh and he has an art gallery.

Look at the difficulty the state, AFL top to bottom, has had establishing a national comp team in that code. Think the A League really has a chance?

The state has increased from 500 000 to 550 000.

For Western United AL games at North Hobart more people turn out to watch the team, that doesn't belong to Tas, than turn out for Western U and Mac home games in Geelong and South Sydney. This is despite little media coverage either.

The costs of an AFL Stadium are exorbitant. I've been heavily involved in the campaign against it. Not against a stadium per se, but that model.

It was devised 4 days before former Lib Premier, Peter Gutwein, quit. He decided he wanted to become an AFL club Pres. The Mac Point stadium notion is flawed.

tasmania would've been great because it would've been the first team there outside of cricket ... would've shown the people there that soccer cares more about them than aussie rules

Yeah now there are the Jackjumpers and soon AFL, starting to become a bit of a crowded sporting landscape.

yeah exactly, they really fumbled by waiting til 2019 for more expansion, 2015 tassie + canberra/wollongong would've been perfect

NHO is the perfect location for a Football stadium. Central. Close to bars and restaurants. It’s too small for AFL. It’s owned by the City of Hobart, so I’m sure a long term lease can be negotiated. It probably wouldn’t cost a fortune to turn it into a rectangular stadium.

It ticks so many boxes.
