The Ange at Tottenham Thread

I remember back at the 2014 WC where we didn’t get a point under Ange albeit with a rookie squad.

That WC is a microcosm of Tottenhams performances this season (particularly with the senior players out)

When we got to that third game against Spain, we were knackered and a poor Spain who got destroyed by Netherlands completely embarrassed us in a dead rubber.

Sometimes things come full circle.

Let’s be honest, when his U17’s lost to Laos and we failed to qualify for Youth WC and he was hounded by Foz live on air, everyone thought this guy was a joke of a manager.

He redeemed himself completely at Brisbane, playing a brand of football that was a year or two ahead of the league.

Then he went on a crazy run from Asia Cup to Japan to Celtic. All of this was punctuated by one of our worst performances at a WC & almost failing to qualify for 2018, almost getting Yokohama relegated in his first season & a rough start to life at Celtic.

His career has been a mixed bag but fair play to him he got to the EPL.

Some comments that Ange is probably high up on Dortmund's short-list. Given their error of too much internal hiring, Dortmund needed a change and having periods of coaches with very attacking play, Ange fits the bill. Not to mention Ange understands big clubs and has a clear aim. Dortmund need the short term change and longer term vision.

Can you really see Ange again at another big 4 European league? The sentiments about Ange voiced by Tottenham media sounds eerily similar to Ange before he left the Socceroos ... that Ange is stubborn, that Ange insists on playing a style of football for which he doesn't have the cattle.

It was said, and now seems to be true, that at the top of these big 4 leagues, the opposition coaches are at the top of their game, and they quickly figure out how to unravel Ange's one dimensional strategy of "attack, attack, attack" even when he's in the lead, even when he's play with his 3rd string team.

Also, my 1 cent worth of comments on fitness, exercise and sports science ... I think there would be people out there who could better prepare a team physically so there would be less injuries. When the entire 1st team is out with injuries, that's not "unlucky". That amount of injuries -- my 1 cent opinion -- is Ange insisting on playing an extremely fast paced game plan without adequately preparing the team for the physical demands, and pushing the team into this fast-pace too quickly, without slowly easing them into it.

Levy is probably happy he has a manager that isn’t calling him out for not spending on players in public. That’s honestly most likely the reason Ange is still in the role
Yep - Conte melted down during a press conference and sacked soon enough.

Celtic fans said the same thing when Ange failed in European competition

Celtic and European success haven't met since the Lisbon Lions of 1967. At least Rangers have made a final of the Europa League in the last 5 years.

If they want to be successful in Europe they need to sacrifice the league or 1-2 of their cups as they don't have the depth to compete on all fronts. Much like Spurs.

I can't, personally.

He'll get a handsome payout when he gets the sack and will take time off chilling out on the Greek Islands.

He may step back into football in Greece with his dads favourite club in AEK Athens (that would be fitting) or maybe in Cyprus with underperforming powerhouses APOEL FC.

He's not getting a Big 5 gig ever again and I doubt the next tier down (Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium) will look at him either.

It's Greece and Cyprus from here on ;)

There is no doubt he will manage at the top level after Spurs regardless of what happens in the coming months. He is part of the merry go round now.

And don't think that there isn't anyone that still holds belief that with the right ingredients he can bring barnstorming success to a club, as he has done before.

The vocal minority are always exactly that.

I agree

Greece, Cyprus is his level...although the owners there are notoriously fickle and wont take long to pull the sack trigger if results dont come early

they're less likely to be charmed by his Greekness though and more likely see him as a Kangaroo

the first player Ange fell out with at Celtic was a Greek

Don't see it. The Prem is obsessed with New Age Managers that are between 35-45 years of age.

Ange is a Dinosaur in those terms. Gone are the days of Allardyce and Co for relegation battles.

Also you wouldn't want Ange in a mid-table / relegation fodder club. He succeeds when he is able to build the best squad in the league.

He needs to go to a powerhouse club in any league. That's his next move.

My concern is that he has put paid to future Australian managers getting a go in England.

To be honest, Australian football is a million miles off it.

Monty who was considered one of the best local coaches in the A-league was awful at Hibs and is showing how clueless he is in the prem. he’d be lucky to get a gig in League 1. Same with Jedinak.

Popa failed in Europe, so did Kisnorbo, Kewell, Muscat etc.

To borrow from the great George Carlin, the European football system is a club & Australia aren’t in it.

Ange doesn’t need to rep Australia, he’s done his time, he deserves that big pay day if it comes to him. I always maintained on the other forum that Ange to Tottenham was great for his bank account but a step too far in progression.

Tottenham are a big club that have failed to live up to its stature and wealth. If Conte & Jose couldn’t make it work, there’s no way Ange could have.

But fair play to Ange because he’s going to be very comfortable in retirement after starting his career at little old Hellas and getting rinsed live on national TV. That in itself is a great story.

Just as an aside - Kewell by all accounts was a very good 'coach'. He developed the skills of the players when he was an assistant manager. Maybe that should be his role. Not everyone is cut out to be a manager.
