The Australian Championship Thread

Isn’t this technically a franchise system too? 8 clubs have bought in a license for an exclusive position.
spin doc eh.
Don't think JJ/FA see it that way nor the Clubs who passed the gongs needed to support and grow it.
There is no barrier who can throw their hat in the ring to participate, certainly not costing millions for a new entity but long time known established community Clubs.
Also P/R isn't out of the question but an intent, and as JJ says to include reach down to grass roots.
Technically quite different to a MLS/APL model infact makes it a sensational directive thats been a lonnng time coming.
Maybe re read below some real important points for our game in bold but yer I know, you threw out the bait but I luv to respond when to answer comes back so easy :)

Football Australia Chief Executive Officer James Johnson hailed the Australian Championship as a bold leap forward for the sport: “The Australian Championship is much more than a competition – it’s a national celebration of football; uniting proud historic clubs, emerging talent, and inter-generational community connection. It reflects the core values of Australian football: authenticity, opportunity, and ambition.

“This competition will complement t
he A-League, NPL, and Hahn Australia Cup, providing a connected, meaningful pathway for players and fans alike. Today’s brand launch is a statement of our commitment to grow domestic football in Australia and unlock its full potential.”

Id normally say welcome to the "true roots" football part of the forum, but if im not mistaken wasnt it you that was chastizing 'old football' ppl from commenting on the Aleague?? Yet you got offended when you got called out for being a hypocrite, and now you’re here to prove it!
It is only fair that I get to come on to the little clubs page and have my say as well.

But isn’t this just marketing 101 spin? Market it as the anti to the other perception of the A-league. I am Pro to both of course but these quotes are just marketing gimmicks.

By definition, haven’t the 8 clubs become a franchise of this exclusive spot in the leagues? Why is that a bad thing though?

hey you'd know better than me MP, your involved with great spin docs since 02.

If we really wanna get technical Melbourne Croatia were the first franchise after they bought the beloved Essendon Ucrania Lions! lol lets hope for success and the pyramids comint ahead soon.

Edit: frustrated and drunk - joel king out!

yer whatever, success well yer we will see - this country has been pretty pathetic getting behind anything good about football generally as far as I'm concerned past to present.
The pyramid won't happen with your clubs - if I was a business owner I'd have nothing of the sort after what it costed me for eg, so yer I just hope the better for the game below your comp and you guys stay with yourselves your really not part of the game DNA imo, no offense meant just plain fact.

No matter how we spin it, for the time being, it’s a glorified post season tournament for NPL clubs to appease these ethnic clubs.

I actually feel for the players, and have a few mates who have already sign on with a couple of Victorian teams, year round football with literally no break. Say South Melbourne make the grand final of the NPLVic, the players will be exhausted by the time this comp come around.

Hopefully within a couple of years it can turn in a full home and away season with at least 20 games.

Why dont we just put the best/most capable 10 clubs in. If it’s 5 from VIC and 5 from NSW, so be it, grow from there.

No team from WA has the resources to compete at this stage so it makes sense no sense having one team in.

DNA maybe too deep then again maybe not.
Organic ground up clubs stemmed from local roots and have tentacles from kids followed by U6 up.
P/R and all is welcome for better or worse.

Forget what was announced today. Does anybody know what is the state of further clubs to join the 2026 (hopefully home and away) version. I've heard a lot of rumours but really don't know anyone close enough to any of the clubs to confirm.

honestly, even marketing spin is an improvement if clubs think that shaping up a bit and meeting some criteria means getting admitted in the championship, clubs then have an incentive to be ambitions

Im pretty sure this is going to be a once off. The clubs likely didnt want it but if its a preview into a proper nst in 2026 then it will be worth it.

I cant possibly see this champions league type model being repeated in consecutive seasons. Feb to Dec football is simply too much to be an annual thing, but as a once off it will be ok.

I'll go far as to say that if a proper nst doesnt kick off in 2026 this years format will be binned, likely by the clubs themselves.

By the time this kicks off in October, we will know what 2026 looks like.

Whilst im not enthusiastic about this it will be interesting to see what kind of attendances this can pull in Oct-Dec away from competing against the full catalogue of winter footy codes and all our other football divisions. Realistically fixturing should be able to avoid clashes with A league games.

In saying that... if this model (reduced obviously to just the 8 winners) is the promotion mechanism between NPL and Championship, I'm all for it.

I really can't see any merit based promotion being introduced. I reckon (at least for the foreseeable future) promotion will always be financial/requirements based. Merit might get a club in the conversation, but if they can't meet the requirements that the existing clubs have already met, then I can't see promotion occurring. Not saying I'm agree with that, just saying that's how the FA operate. Maybe one day, but not anytime soon.
