The Orange Army. (Brisbane Roar Official Thread)

I was hoping jelacic would improve this year but been a slow start

Great to see wadders do well
I went on record saying I thought this might be Jelacic's season. Against Sydney it looked to me like he was either unwilling or had been told not to go all out with the ball.

In the pre-season game against the Qld State side he showed what he can do at pace and I loved it. Not necessarily creating actual goal scoring opportunities, but bringing the ball forward through traffic and creating turmoil amongst the defenders was really good to see.

I'm thinking Lions FC are the legitimate descended club from Hollandia Inala Soccer Club and Brisbane Roar the little bastard child.

Anyone claiming that they both are legitimate direct descendants is being disengenous.
Surely Brisbane Roar would be expelled from the ALeague immediately if they ever admitted to having effnick heritage.😏

I was thinking about our defensive resilience and it seems to me like we are missing a dominant centreback.

Thinking back over the years, we have had Craig Moore mentoring Luke Devere, the likes of Jade North and Matt Smith, and more recently Tom Aldred. When we have been playing well as a team we have had at least one dominant centreback - as opposed to just players who were centrebacks.

Looking at our current options, including Scott Neville when he returns, I am not seeing a centreback who is going to truly lead our defensive group.

It think you get better results defensively when you have at least one good experienced central defender who can guide, mentor and forge that defensive solidity. It is not the same having a defensive coach or all the practice and systems you like - having the presence on field in the moment has to be better for anticipating, gut feel and commitment.

Are we lacking that in our central defenders? Warland and Bility do not stand out as leaders, and while I really like Scott Neville I do not think of him in a dominant leadership role. Who do we have to boss the box? Who do we have to say "stay" or "go" when things start getting crumbly?

Who the heck looked at Zadkovich's managerial record and decided he was best for this job. This club needs new owners big time.

I honestly think they didn't look at his record at all. We had been through several coaches in a few weeks and he was there already. That would be the limit of decision making - a temporary solution squeezed into another longer term 'decision'.

I am still hopeful - we have been improving each week and you can see the opportunities we are creating that should have resulted in goals. That is not on Zadkovich unless it becomes the consistent unconverted chances we have seen before.

I also like the way we are playing under him in general. I am all for giving him a proper chance based on what I have seen so far.

Not sure whichgame

Not sure which game you watched last week. We were not good. Every time we got the ball, there was no support around the ball carrier. We gave up possession too easily. When we did play it forward, it was often a play and hope. We were not giving players a chance to get on the ball and create an attacking phase.

It was obvious how they would apply pressure as soon as we got the ball and crowd us, but we kept persisting by allowing that to happen and getting caught in possession.

We are far from good yet, and we were totally out marshalled by a very good SFC. I like our attacking intent, and the way we are trying to play good combination football. I like the way we are building our attacks compared to the overly defensive or uncontrolled longball options.

We are not afraid to use the middle where we can and we do attempt to bring the ball through traffic as well.

Van der Saag and Warland are horrible footballers when on the ball. Warland nearly gave a goal away early from a poor pass, van der Saag just did give a goal away by his inability to control a simple ball on the ground.

gee we look ugly, but it wouldn't surprise me if we got some points out of this.

not sure what to make of us at the moment

we are a bit limited on the ball, but pretty decent at times off it. There was a lot of times where we had a heavy first touch but a team mate would be there to collect the ball or there would be an easy passing option in traffic. Waddingham also seems capable of scoring off very limited opportunities - particularly since there are almost no deck balls into the penalty area coming from our mids.
So if we can tighten our defence a bit we look a team capable of winning games we don't really deserve to. We won't win any beauty prizes though. In the meantime we are at the bottom of the table and look like we deserve to be there

didn't realise live that the roar actually dominated possession, but we had less touches in the pen box. Definition of ineffective possession. We seem to have a lot of technically limited players though so hard to see how it improves....

HALFTIME COMMENT - did not post at the time for some reason.

I saw Bility just left flat footed by pace again when Piscopo set the goal up.

Jelacic has started going to ground when he is losing a hip to hip challenge trying to get a freekick. It leaves him on the ground and his opponent free to run every time so I hope he forgets that trick quickly.

On the pointy end, we are still constructing some very nice plays but even when the final pass is good our finish is not right.

We dominated possession because we couldn't find any way into the attacking area and just kept the ball. Victory had no concern about that at all.

Halloran is adding nothing to us. When we are attacking I cannot remember another player who was not in the place he was expected to be so often. In the first half I saw him in a relatively good natured fashion indicating that the person passing to him should be looking for a through ball inside. Later on he was saying he wanted it wide, and a third time he stayed back when his team mate expected him to continue his run. His play is obviously just too random for his team mates to have a clue where he is going.

Zadkovich swapped out Burke-Gilroy for Berenguer this week - along with a different formation (4-2-2-2 last week and 4-4-2 this week). Halloran playing where Burke-Gilroy did last week was ineffective. We were disjointed and flawed up the right.

Warland is in proximity to too many failed team moments, both attacking and defending, for it to be just bad luck. I do not think he is up to this.

Van Der Saag can do some good things going forward and some good things defending, but he gives up the ball or just doesn't get it right frequently.

I think it is safe to say the 3 players that Adelaide let go (Halloran, Warland and Van Der Saag) was not poor judgement. None of them stand out as a quality addition.

Today we were more physical but less competitive across the 90 minutes. I think today was our first backward step this season despite it being the very skilled Victory we were opposing. It was the first time this season the team looked like they were nowhere near the quality needed across the 90 minutes after being in the game for 45 minutes.

Waddingham could have had a greater impact if his touch had been surer a few times. When you look at his 'could have been' moments he is getting into good positions, winning the ball, and trying to do the right thing - it is just not coming off most times.

We need Burke-Gilroy on as a starter. His energy and speed added to good reading of the game are critical when we are not the best technical side by such a margin.

When Klein came on I did not see much of a presence so no idea how he will actually be. Not surprising being a 20 year old with only 20 minutes at this level. Still so early in his senior career but having him replace Shour was a clear loss for us defensively. Shour had done well as part of a desperate defence that mostly held Victory for two thirds of the game.

I thought Brown did OK out of left fullback again. He had no idea where Velupillay was for the 'Piscopo' goal with Velupillay simply cutting inside for the tap in but I don't blame him for the goal. His only option would have been to attack that ball facing the goal and he could not have known what Piscopo would do.

Jelacic is worrying me a lot. We are not seeing his pace at all and he is barely using his foot skills - most often trying to run at three quarter pace down the wing then checking back inside and stopping. He is capable of much more than we are seeing. That might be on Zadkovich to resolve.

O'Shea has had a few 'less brilliant' games now. He is contributing at a good level in terms of the rest of the team but he has made some off passes and lost balls that he usually holds. He can still hold up the ball under pressure and his vision and passing accuracy still shows most times - I am definitely not worried about him in the side.

Berenguer has not really clicked in the team since he came here. When we need an experienced head to step up and control that midfield - creating dangerous moments to stop teams just relaxing against our frequently blunt attacks - I find his presence and impact lacking. Maybe I expect too much of him in the midfield role or I am just missing what he does.

Struick, when he came on this time, looked more like a youth opposing adults than I have seen in his previous appearances. He is 21 and slight of build so that is not so surprising, but I was not seeing any cunning or design in his play as such. For the Geria goal - Struick was standing with his hand on Geria's arm but with Geria goal side of him. What was the point of that? As soon as Geria ran he was unmarked and unopposed for a beautifully headed goal off a perfectly weighted corner.

Zabala had some very nice touches and made a few excellent passes for his short stint. Not enough to show that he should be a starter - but 2 goals down and only a few minutes left is no chance to show much. I did not see much of Zimarino in his 20 minutes to judge him on either.

We have a lot of work to do to be competitive for 90 minutes if our opponents go ahead. Freke, Brown, Shour, O'Shea, Waddingham, Hingert and Burke-Gilroy can all lift to the standard we need to see. Jelacic has dropped away and I hope he gets it back soon - he should lift to the level we need from him yet. Bility continues to get caught out by quick players - can we live with that? Warland, Halloran and Van Der Saag worry me because they are all so heavily involved in our play - especially having all 3 in our starting line-up.

On the positive side, before Victory shut up shop on us and left us devoid of ideas, we created our chances without being clinical enough to finish. It did take a very good save to keep us from scoring an offside goal. Against a very skilful attacking side we held out most of what they threw at us.

Improve our defensive actions and decisions and I agree with Grazor - we can win ugly - but in my eyes we can still win ugly by playing attractive football.

I don’t think there was an offside in the buildup when the keeper saved from Waddingham’s header, based on the single replay I saw. I reckon if it had gone in the goal would have been allowed on VAR review.

I don't expect perfection from the beginning. Our fall from grace has been quite catastrophic and well documented. It's also quite clear that the FA nor FQ really.

The idea is right. To play through the middle and all that, but you can't do that if you are getting basics wrong. Players all spreading far out when we are in possession isn't ideal. You can't play through the middle and try to play combination football by reducing your passing options or trying to make the very low probability passes.

I missed yesterdays game, but it sounds like more of the same. Zadkovich had a 20% win rate at Perth and honestly, with the way our club is run, I don't expect him to do much better here.

Anyone bought of this seasons kits? Apparently the sizing is messed up. People saying they had to buy a XXXL when they are usually an M. I don't want to order one and the sizing is off kilter.

Zadkovich should never have got the job. He has no positive track record as a manager. Unfortunately, the Roar has become a bit of a boys club and so it's probably mates looking out for mates.
