The Western United Thread

I vaguely remember the NSL had AFL linked teams such as Carlton and Collingwood. Similar to what we will see with APIA.

Would anyone know/remember why these failed, and would they work in this day and age? Could this be a way forward with NRL and AFL clubs?
there have been 24 franchises since the start of the nsl

10 are still going in the a league

5 are in the npl system
9 have folded

Of those that folded, nearly half were backed by another code (4).

Only 1 club has ever folded that was willing to play in the state league system

First the NZ Knightz, Then Nth QLD Fury and Gold Coast United and now Western United. Who will be next Bris Roar>?

Once bitten twice shy.

Which one was that?
Fury

Strikers, Gold Coast United, Northern spirit, Woolongong wolves and canberra city all still exist in the npl system which is a strike rate of 83% survival. All 26 traditional clubs that played in the state leagues and went back to the nsl still survive. Only traditional club that died is western suburbs and that was while they were in the nsl. They got absorbed by apia

It does surprise me on these forums to see the number of people who seem to assume that licences have been somehow withheld from potential candidates for expansion. If the money was there, the licence would have been allocated. The APL/FFA have NEVER had the luxury of turning anyone down except, absurdly, South Melbourne (ffs, really?) - Team 11 never had the cash; they were hoping for the govt to step in and the govt said no. Canberra has never had the cash nor Tasmania (who never will - the state is a financial dumpster fire).

We are neither a big country nor a rich one, and football in this country is a suicidal investment. We effectively won Lotto when Bill Foley bought into Auckland.

Why is it that we keep trying to reinvent the wheel?
