World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Langerak refused a call up when Popa came in. I think he’s gone for good.
Water under a bridge you'd think. He had his chances and didn't succeed. He was unfortunate at times with injury meanigg Federici played but Jones and Vukovic coming ahead of him under BVM was also telling.

O’Neill was average at best tonight when he came on. Always seems so sluggish, and likely to give the ball away. Would have liked to see Balard given some minutes, based on how he is apparently playing in the Netherlands (I haven’t seen him play this season).

As someone said earlier, Ryan is not our issue here.

We were playing well in 1st half, but we switched off despite having a couple of chances in 2nd half & allowed Bahrain to come at us. Is it the coaching as we are playing without freedom.
We clearly have been the better team in the last 2 games, but lack confidence, freedom, courage????

Do you really think Ryan was the issue tonight?
What did he do that any other world classs keeper wouldn't have done?

You want to look at who's at fault look no further than the bloke going 5 at the back inviting the Bahrainis tto attack, and than not even having a transition player on the field.

In my opinion, Ryan is not World Class.

I try to take faith by the reaction when we equalised. Look at the players. Relief perhaps but there's a lot of emotion there.

I think many played the game with usual idea of not overdoing it and surviving. It's risky but they do it all the time as pros because they think just enough will be good enough. It's naive. Post game interviews they always talk about how they felt they had control of the game.

Not now but he was 2015 to 2022. Well the last two years at AZ and the Copenhagen UCL qualification wasn't bad either. Single handily got Copenhagen there.

He's played over 100 games in the EPL.... No, it's the EPL that is wrong.
Got to remember how poor Brighton defence was bad then and it's only been 3 or so years they shored that up and had the cash for a top class side. They were little pre covid.

It's more Jas said Ryan concedes lots like the first one tonight. The Argentina one was horrible but why do Behich and Rowles pass it back there?

Once again, the second France goal deflected off Behich and landed in the worst spot. No keeper reaches it.

Watch all the goals this weekend. Plenty of tall keepers aren't getting to them.

I'm not a fan.

Nail on head there I think regarding a transition player. In itself, I don’t think 5 at the back is necessarily a problem. The problem is that you need to have the right players in central midfield to make it work, and I don’t think we have the right players, certainly not in the squads Poppa has picked. You need a Luongo, or maybe a Robertson, to quickly build play when possession is regained.

Back 5 is killing us. Miller and Behich so flat. In turn Goodwin and McGree left flat with poor midfielders not offering and outlet. We need drastic change in formation and players.

The players are there. We should be sitting here with a plucky 1:0. It hadn't occurred to me how well the other resorts had gone until full time. It's a group round Robin now with a slight risk that Japan could drop some points also.

If the defence was bad, why didn't they drop?

yep
we have this do it the hard way in everything.
every single moment/decision takes forever our way.
The play, the bounce of the ball, no flukey goals,VAR checks take ages, everything always on the hinge.

It has always been the hard way for Aus football. I feel like God gives us this great country but he is like fuck yourselves if you think you can have a football team. My daughter was up at 2am so I missed this one. Woke up sometime after 6am, jumped on twitter and see we are 0-1 up with about 30 minutes remaining. Load up paramount to see the ball somehow looping over Ryan's head and the score is now 2-1.

I assume I would only watch a reply if I hate myself right?

Some context I suppose

Getting results in Asia is hard. Anyone old enough to remember the 0-1 win with the gold gen when Bres scored will know this. That match was awful and we deserved to lose.

We are actually in a better position mathematically with the draw. Given the results went our way as people have noted

That being said, fucking kill me.

I was thinking Nizzy, but Robbo or Massimo are just as competent.
