World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

We lost the play from the O'Neill substitution. Not saying O'Neill was the cause but from that moment we started to play defensively and lost control.

Geria looked to me like he spoiled just about every pass forward - bombing away to nobody or to a Bahrain player. I really rate Geria but his attacking impact was poor most of the time this game. Still did some good things attacking but less effective than he should have been.

Cacares just did not have a good game. Seemed too far back to use his skills to create danger but also looked to be shakier on the ball than I have seen him. Lost the ball a lot more than his skill and touch normally holds - I guess that is being exposed to a higher level in international football but he did slip a lot and being played deeper (as someone else said earlier) is not his best position.

Miller scares me. I really liked the good stuff he did and was really terrified of the bad stuff he did. I actually think he hurt himself doing another flop when he should have kept his feet and he landed sideways on the ball. Looked very ginger after that.

As soon as Popa started to micro manage I was worried. He gets up at the edge of his box and directs traffic and you know he has switched to the "defend our lead" mentality that has seen him engineer a loss from a winning position before.

We played a much better style of football in the first half so that is a good mark for Popa. I do not agree with Goodwin on the right - again it is not putting players where they do their best work. That same Arnie/Popa trade off that hopes to jag a goal in one moment at the expense of 90 minutes of better play.

Bloody unlucky to concede those two goals although Burgess' touch was awful. You can't have a CB giving the ball away in that position.

Very happy to see Yengi doing what he was doing all game - continued to try and take the game to Bahrain when we got the ball forward. Still too little drive across the entire team for 90 minutes which has to count as a mark against Popa.

Ref did a fantastic job all game - except I can't understand how little extra extra time he added when there were stoppages in the 10 minutes added. I think he had a plane to catch maybe and just wanted to get away from the BS tactics.

We had 3 points at our fingertips and dropped it - ending up lucky to scrape a point. That's football but how bloody frustrating and enraging to see two freak moments ripping the life out of supporters.

Still - I count that game a continuing improvement in the refreshing of our squad and game style.

All the talk about Ryan v Gauci - why isn't Izzo given a chance, as he's the only keeper in the squad actually playing?!!!
I don’t think in this thread it’s Ryan v Gauci, it’s more about the weird comments blaming Ryan for the goals.

We are so lucky Saudi lost to Indonesia and Japan keeps winning

it leaves the group insanely tight for second place

I think he gets a hand to the 2nd one. The first one is a typical Maty goal.. he has conceded alot of those.
Name them and define a lot. Was there one against Syria at the Asian Cup?

That was a shit show. Burgess and Souttar with defensive lapses. A system that hands initiative to the opposition. We need to be more proactive against lower ranked teams. We could have buried them.

But Langerak is.
Reckon Langerak may be brought in. Langerak failed in nearly every game he got for Australia. Harsh for the France friendly but Brazil he was shown up when it was on him. Iraq away the odd drop for the cross. Red card against Ecuador. Ange's plans were confirmed when he conceded against Qatar in a friendly while stuck on the floor.

I agree with most of that RIMB. Although for me I count the game as a continuation of the frustration at the selections in the team and the substitutions and the continuing lethargy and sloppiness in our game style.

EVERY RESULT WE WANTED, WE GOT THIS WINDOW. FFS!
Like we could not have asked for a better time for Saudi to be in such poor form. But if you look at the table it really is a case of a coin toss between Australia, Saudi, Indonesia and Bahrain. They are all more interested in not losing than winning games. China have won the second most games in the group and they are dead last. Their biggest issue atm is when they don't win they lose.

2 wins are needed vs China and Indonesia next up.

Felt Geria was very wasteful.

3 months now but surely we don't revert to a back 4? The players would adapt easily but I don't think Popovic will.

Ref was great and I was surprised how early he blew.

But we may not in the next window. It is going to be frustrating seeing the Kiwis at the World Cup and Australia not there. There is a good chance that may happen.

Name them and define a lot. Was there one against Syria at the Asian Cup?

Does the one against Argentina count?

Or when the ball went over his head against France in Russia.

I'm no fan of Ryan and was glad when Gauci replaced him thinking that's the end of his tenure.

We should get 6 points in our next window. Indonesia and China ffs

Selections are a massive issue, but the starting side today was much better than normal if you look at the types of players in the forward positions. I see that as an improvement. McGree Yengi Goodwin with Irvine and Cacares in midfield is a more balanced type of squad despite them not necessarily being the best actual players available for each position.

That lethargic play is our killer. I saw once in the second half where we actually slowed the play down on purpose - that was good play and excellent game management. The rest of the time it was the continuation of 'be patient and you will win' that frustrates the crap out of me.

The players know it hit their complacency is disgusting. To think they could've freed themselves from all this with a bit more professionalism.

It's so ironic we got worse when our apparent problems went off. Freak goals of course but I'd hoped for more cohesive attack to kill the game off.

Some comfort is ME Japan away but it's H2H across the group now. Indonesia will be bouyed by their position. They've probably got to try to win anyway but had we built a bigger lead they'd have attacked more.

Langerak refused a call up when Popa came in. I think he’s gone for good.

It's more Jas said Ryan concedes lots like the first one tonight. The Argentina one was horrible but why do Behich and Rowles pass it back there?

Once again, the second France goal deflected off Behich and landed in the worst spot. No keeper reaches it.

Watch all the goals this weekend. Plenty of tall keepers aren't getting to them.
