Football books

I was there with my son and future son in law.I too was surprised at the booing of the Uruguayan national anthem but a couple of weeks later I was talking to a Uruguayan acquaintance and he said this rattled the South Americans as they had always regarded us as a not serious football nation and after the booing they realised the crowd and our team were up for it.Viduka's miss made me super anxious but Schwarzer and Aloisi did the job.The feeling of sheer joy when JA scored still hits me whenever I watch a replay of the penalty shootout.
Maybe we should boo anthems more often haha

Dont have the heart to boo japan mind you

Me too. No matter how often I see it I get this huge grin on my face.

Interesting book on women's perspective

There are football books and then there is this masterpiece....

Any insights?

It's an acknowledged classic of football literature. A powerful, endlessly quotable prose to the game and to the history of the game from an emotionally passionate South American perspective....

From the early days of football on that continent up to the 2002 WC.

Lots of wonderful and beautifully written vignettes rather than chapters and one I really liked was his account of the war that broke out between Honduras and El Salvador in 1969. What became known as 'the soccer war'...

Makes you fall in love with Latin America without even having to go there.

Boh excellent reads, particularly the Jonathan Wilson one.
Thanks.

Jonathon Wilson has written one of the greatest football books I've read - Inverting The Pyramid.

Very useful history of tactics/formations from 1932 - 2000s.

Then Zonal Marking : Michael Cox, covers the time since.

In contrast, my Lawrie McKinna book is probably the only football bio with a sex scene.

I remember Lawrie's wife reading that chapter and saying: "Oh no... I can't let my father read this."
Did he recount his time at Blacktown City in any detail?

Thanks.

Agree. 'Inverting the Pyramid' was a prodigious book from JW. Until recently nobody, at least in the English language world had written such a significant book on the evolution of football tactics and footballing philosophy into what it is today and why it is and what it is....

Check out 'Zonal Marking' and 'The Mixer', both by Michael Cox. They both have a bit of history too but are a little more technical based than 'Inverting the Pyramid'.
