I didn't realise Ipswich put a bid in. Fremantle City another interesting one, but would add mammoth costs to the league. West Adelaide were having a laught though lol.

Sad for the APL that all these "bids" have dried up or have become so disillusioned with the ponzi scheme that they had to look to NZ for the latest instalment.

I think in the last round of expansion the location was hand picked, so these other older bids never had a chance. So instead of opening up to everyone like in that image, they just said "we want Auckland and Canberra, daddy want a fish".

That quote 'fish where the fish are", do we know if he meant where the rich bidders are or where the population is?

A new Gold Coast entity has expressed interest in joining the A-League. Across all codes, why has the Gold Coast struggled to sustain teams in national competitions?

Each team that's been on the Gold Coast, in whatever sport they've been in, has battled some unique problems. Having said that, it's relatively well accepted that the Gold Coast was adversely affected by the economic downturn. The expression I used to use was "fish where the fish are". Football's got that right in western Sydney. There are literally millions of people it can draw on in western Sydney. I'm a believer in making sure you've got very big population bases to draw on for your team. If you don't have that, then there are challenges.

A national knockout competition featuring A-League and state league teams has long been mooted. Is that a priority of yours?

It's a simply wonderful idea, but it needs to be properly costed and then decisions made around bringing it in. I know a lot of work is being done and will continue to be done to see if we can bring it to fruition because everyone can recognise what a great connection point it would be for all levels of the game.

I can't fathom how people think you can just snap your fingers and conjure up a new club. It's been hard enough to sell A-League clubs let alone setup new ones. Just look at recent history with Perth, Jets and Mariners. Any one of those clubs has a lot of potential to be a genuine 'big' club yet it was a massive undertaking to get buyers. Jets had to be owned by other AL clubs just to prevent them from extinction. If they struggle to get a buyer for an established club with a good sized venue and a solid fanbase, it's no wonder they can't line up an owner in Canberra or Hobart to start a club. I'll grant that so far Auckland seems to have been a success, but we'll have to wait and see once that shine has worn off and the put out a rubbish season. It wasn't that long ago that WSW were looking like a success, then they start played rubbish football for a decade and experienced fan issues and now they are a shadow of what they were.
 
Didn't that bozo Caggiano state that he appreciated waiting for another season (2025-26), in order to enter his Canberra mens team. Also, to take over the women's team? Is it now off?

and those behind APL mock the NSL that were pioneers more than anything else, policy on the run feck all outside funding and media sticking it up the game more than nowadays.
HTF do people defend the comp when they see stalwart Club like PG be a basket case.
Jets, talk about the fish, region huge for football, how many years has that brand rotted ? supporters walked away.
Like seriously that is such woeful management in a no brainer area yet people stand back in HOPE 1 2 5yrs supporters will return in droves.
White collar robbery to the supporter base and they keep getting away with it, suckers taking up membership why would you, go watch NPL 1 for nics and cheap pluto pup hahaha it is in aussie heartland :)

WSW and other active support, well the conservative aussie don't like passion/flares and expected to sit civily like the other codes - put aside the obvious small % who wreck it for the majority but football active support is one of the best pieces of our games experience and its been ruined, like the ethnics before but no this is different this is the ethnic cleansed comp not meant to happen hahaha

Auckland and the APL will enjoy and boast through the honeymoon, I'd put $'s on the time will fizzle out just like a tragic early failed marriage.
Corica ball will last only so long as well, like a new ball in cricket, once the shine wears off bring on the "spin".

He did say that, but he also said they need more funding to get it over the line, possibly from an overseas club. So, until they officially announce anything it's just a bid.

The overseas club was always touted as Aston Villa - but I never saw anything official.

Yeah just like the $18.5 million they told Ross Pelligra to blow out of his arse when he as keen on funding the South Melbourne bid... lucky for the APL they sold him Perth Glory license 5 years later for $1 .... hahahah savvy bit of business that.

And now he is coming to Canberra to fund an Ice Skating rink, instead of an A-League side.

Lucky Pelligra didn't fund South Melbourne then, you might have had to swap the ouzo for grappa ;)

Yeah dodged a bullet in the end ...... in hindsight becoming a franchise would have been the fastest way to destroy the South Melbourne that I love... it stung at the time though....

Private money or not.

When this stadium opens it doors, western united will have achieved what no other A-league club has done, and contributed more to the infrastructure of the sport in this country than any other professional club.

They will sit at the top of the football food chain in this country once that occurs.

I just cannot get my head around the constant degrading of them. They are doing so much better than so many other clubs.
