Heaven forbid you have a surname with too many vowels, or not enough...I'm ethnic myself and people assume I wasn't born in this country by default

Greek aussies speak to each other in greek, and have all this greek slang for each other. Unless you're greek you don't truly fit inFair enough mate, but you cant tell me with a straight face that you were ever made to feel not welcome? Can you?

Thats mighty tolerant of you MuzzieMy experience at Apia and Marconi.
Went a couple of times and never went again. BUT I was only 18 or 19 at the time.
Probably would have a higher tolerance for it now.
Its a sad reality but undeniably so... Harry Souttar is more Aussie than I or my kids will EVER be considered in this country.
It's embarrassing it is still there but can you imagine a politician trying to change it these days? Christ, the debates would be insufferable. I, for one, am a fan of the Wattle flag but that's just me.British people are hardly ethnic as such. They colonised the place , the modern Australia founders, and still have their flag on the Aussie flag
Thats mighty tolerant of you Muzzie... hahahahahah
Yeah man, NOBODY in Australia knows what Malaka means eh? C'mon ...... I personally, never felt ill at ease socially with Lebanese, Turkish, Italian or Vietnamese friends, even when at their houses or events, and even when they were all speaking their own language (and probably making fun of me).Greek aussies speak to each other in greek, and have all this greek slang for each other. HAHAHAHAAHAHAAH "Stone the flaming crows cobber".I was a country kid from the bush. It was as alien to me as a Oxford Street was back then for me.
Stockholm syndrome from years of "no but where are you really from?" perhaps.Harry Souttar IS NOT Australian regardless of what shirt he throws on his back.
My question to 'some' first gen 'aussies' is why do they say I'm Greek/Cro/Italian/Sebian/Macedonian first and then they say 'but I was born here'.
HAHAHAHAAHAHAAH "Stone the flaming crows cobber".
The funny thing is, so do I.... HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHPretty much. Despite both parents being immigrants I get told all the time I sound like the most ocker bloke ever.
They may welcome you, however being greek gives you a special status in these clubs.Yeah man, NOBODY in Australia knows what Malaka means eh? C'mon ...... Yeah thats true, I get the "secret handshake" and 5% off at the bar at South just becuase of where my parents where born .... C'mon man. its 2024. 90% of the "Greek" kids at Hellas matches can't speak Greek beyond perhaps saying their own names and "souvlaki with tztaziki"They may welcome you, however being greek gives you a special status in these clubs.
Nah but surely there's a respect you get among other greeks when you tell them your greek.Yeah thats true, I get the "secret handshake" and 5% off at the bar at South just becuase of where my parents where born .... Hahaha actually quite the opposite.... Try telling a Greek tradie to give you a discount because your both Greek these days..... hahahahahahaahahNah but surely there's a respect you get among other greeks when you tell them your greek.
My hope lies in the next generation mate.. My kids are proud Australians and it brings me joy to see the absolute confusion on their faces when I refer to one of their friends (purely as a descriptor) as "that Asian kid" or the "Indian girl" They young'uns really "don't see colour or race" anymore......I found Greeks to be great they are family and food people. All the dividedness that goes on is so primitive we all want the same shit
And there it is.I was a country kid from the bush. It was as alien to me as a Oxford Street was back then for me.
Edit: But if you mean tolerant now then I don't know what to tell you.
