A-league attendances 24/25

Round 3

Brisbane Roar vs Sydney FC 8,276
Wellington vs Auckland 26,252
That's an extremely impressive crowd figure for the big game in New Zealand. It would beat most of their SuperRugby 'derbies'....

It's the sort attendance that Brisbane Roar were getting in their early days. Not so much these days mind.

Yeah it's a similar boost to the league like when WSW came in against Sydney. So far so good.

Wsws attendence was under 8k

Bit crappy tbh. Anyone know why the drop?

In a closed league, average results long term = average crowds.
People seem to perceive WSW as one of the bigger clubs due to their early success and fanbase, but on field that's definitely not the case. They have basically been very average consistently for decade. That takes it's toll. The ACL win was epic but it was 10 years ago and they haven't won silverware of any kind since. Look at the total regular season points earned since WSW started. We have SFC at the top then a bit of a gap then we have MC, MV and AU all on similar numbers, then another gap and then we have WSW and BR followed by the other average performing clubs. WSW are top of the average group but still very much average. Very similar story at the Roar, so no surprises the crowd numbers a similar. Doing enough to avoid the bottom group but not enough to be genuine contenders. Tough to rally a crowd around mediocrity. At least when a club is consistently poor they gain the underdog status which makes it easier to rally support.
Still early in the season though. Plenty of things can happen. If WSW finds some consistenct form (especially at home) the crowds will return.

Agree. Look at Perth. 15 years of mediocrity takes it toll. This season is already a write off, what is the point of attending and wasting $$$ on sub par football with nothing to play for?

It happens in every country in the world, but the fans keep showing up, week after week. Real supporters show up, no matter how shite their team is.

Yeah if a team can only get a decent crowd for the top few teams that means we cant have a well attended league. Only a few teams can be top

The below is the European average attendance figures for two seasons ago. Read the first column. The Aleague actually compares quit well outside of the top five nations.

MV vs Mac
11,087

Could be much better but considering it's possibly the worst fixture of the season it's a fairly predictable number. I was actually expecting sub 10k on this one.

Bit of context for anyone outside of Vic. Today is a public holiday (first Tuesday of November every year). That means many workplaces will also close for the Monday or people will take an annual/"sick" leave day so they can have a 4 day weekend. This results in a lot of people taking the opportunity to go away. Some people take the Friday as well so they can have a decent getaway. Personally we went to stay with some family in regional Vic so my kids could spend time with their cousins that they never get to see. Weather is absolutely perfect so no shortage of people going on camping/fishing trips.

In short, scheduling all Melbourne teams playing in Melbourne this weekend is a pretty dumb choice. First MV Home game on Sunday arvo is particularly dumb. Maybe one game on the Friday would have been OK, but not both and definitely not Sunday and Monday.

So, 11k for a Sunday arvo on a 4 day weekend against an opponent with a very low number of travelling fans is a fairly predictable figure.

I disagree.

In every country there is the threat of relegation. If Perth were in danger of relegation, i have no doubt crowds would be doubled. I've missed about 20 games since Glorys inception in 1995, and this season I don't see what is the point of attending especially when there is almost no local lads in the team.

Look at AFL for example, Richmond were getting 50k plus every week no less than a year ago. This year, they were towards the bottom, no threat of relegation and had a few games with 20k. They had nothing to play for and there crowds halved.

I think you're both correct!

REAL supporters always show up. There's a lack of resilience with those who don't show up in the dark times.

The casual/bandwagon folk drop off when there's nothing to play for. With relegation, all the matches mean something.
