♔ ♕ ♚ ♛ Australia U17/U20/U23 National Team Tournaments & Discussion Thread ♔ ♕ ♚ ♛

I stand by my earlier comments that this is the best Australian generation I’ve seen in 20+ years.

I absolutely believe Daniel Bennie could play RB/RWB for the Socceroos right now. He is one of the best prospects I’ve seen in a long time. I don’t think there’s a better right back in this country.
I'm hoping this is just the standard we should expect from now on. The u17s convincing win at the latest tournament leads me to hope.

Technically, Japan had some real quality but looked shell-shocked at the situation they found themselves in.

2-0 down with three minutes to go and Japan refused to progress the ball without playing 7-8 passes through midfield.

Reminded me of van Marwijk’s complaint in 2018 about Australian players being too disciplined and following the game plan too strictly.
Interesting. BVM was the anchor on the playing group IMO and stifled any adventure. It'd be interesting to study how Japan recover from setbacks in games as they do tend to get a bit dodgy when they don't get that goal with each qualifying campaign having those odd home game results.

The final will be the last game in this kit. What a testament it'd be to win. Gutted it's tough to find online as I'd want a few of these kits with the player names to celebrate this achievement of making it so far.

China was announced to host this just last year so for the love of god we have to try and host the next one. China made the mistake of big stadiums but clearly no one cares. It only makes sense we bid given the success this time.

We really ought to host it and play a number of games in smaller areas. To be fair I think those grounds will still appear empty for many matches.

The U20 WC is every 2 years and now. South America have hosted many youth tournaments the past decade. The U17 WC will be too and will always be in Qatar. I don't mind it as such as it gives our team that ME experience.

What a fantastic achievement for us. Hopefully this ensures a bright future with us as there are many technically as well as physically and tactically adept footballers in this age group.

There are many standouts for me including Okon-Engstler, Esposito, Quintal, and Bennie (agree with earlier comments on Bennie - think he will be the type of player to keep progressing with the level of football he plays)

Very much looking forward to Saturday and confident we can get a result. How have the Saudi’s looked in their games?

Saudi were staring down the barrel with 20 to go in their group but turned it around to then top it. 96th min 1:0 winner over China then goalless against SK and pens. SK dominated in stats apparently.

They're going to be up to their usual tricks. I think we just need to really hit them hard. A slight benefit is we haven't gone to ET whereas they have and we have 1 or 2 days extra rest over the total tournament due to the schedule (off the top of my head at least).

Awesome! Went to bed at half time but wasn’t really expecting that

They've been less impressive than a lot of teams. Perhaps lucky to be in the final. Not that that matters now, they got there. Defensively solid.

This is a big opportunity for us but I hope we didn't play our final early v Japan. I hope we can keep our cool with the shenanigans. I hope the ref is east or central asian so we get a fair game.

Have to say very impressed at how well we kept possession last night at times. Gave Japan a taste of their own medicine.

Which of this cohort should be short listed for the full team if not picked? Bennie and Toure?

TBH this is best news since Qatar for us.
Great build up play and finish for the 1st goal.
2nd top strike.
Japs could mostly only shoot from edges or out of the box.
Nice to have one of our Teams in Finale.

Is it 10.30pm our time koff Saturday ?

Can't agree enough with the defensive shape held by the boys all game long. I lost count at how many times Japan progressed the ball forward only to be met with zero passing options and having to recycle possession backwards or sideways.

Obviously the Seniors have been able to do similar defensively on the biggest stage but it's in conjunction with the close control, ability to keep the ball in traffic, get your head up then to stick a pass and the freedom and intent in possession that has me drooling over this next gen.

So proud!

I agree Bennie surely is destined to fill the void going back as far as Emerton on the right. I don't know if he should be thrown into the senior team yet. The kid is still 18.

Also would like to think that Mo Toure is some ways ahead of his younger brother at this stage. Especially considering he's getting minutes ahead of him now they're at the same club.
