Australian transfers 24-25 winter

Ah well. He had some alright moments. Portsmouth a big puzzle this season. I hope he'll be reloaded elsewhere.
played 40 games for borough last season

on track to play 20 for portsmouth if he stayed. So a big drop

Another young player that had never played 90 minutes, was physically undersize and went to a big club. Come back to the AL and try again in a few years.
Agree. His natural ability needed consolidation, and he needed to be more of a physical presence, less able to be bullied. He should be loaned out for sure, however i am not sure the A league is the right place. Having said that, he will be mostly mixing it with other teenagers ATM if he was to return. If he doesnt shine it would be a career killer. So thats why i am not sure about a retrun to A league.

Kuol just needs the right fit atm. Westerlo may be good. A team keen on youth development.

It seems the MLS is becoming a destination for young Aussie players I wonder what has triggered this?
probably heresy to some, but I think it is better than the spfl for their future careers. Similar level (maybe slightly higher) but not as high as the eredivisie and more modern style of play

Some of the outbound MLS transfers of late have been pretty impressive, and most are going directly into 1st team Euro squads instead of their respective youth teams.

I mean I can't blame kye leaving hearts he gave them a few years and they aren't progressing so it's fair enough to move on MLS could be ok

At the outset, along with our Mexico friendly in Texas, it appeared it was a sly attempt by players to use the base to stake their WC claim.

Certainly Arnold or Popovic wouldn't be manipulated by a flag on a players profile, or would they?

There were similar thoughts with some of our ME based players being used to the set up there and the potential Rogic move to Qatar would've meant he'd be more accustomed and therefore a benefit.

Alas, I certainly don't think it has much weight. An interesting trend and I think a lot of the more random MLS clubs have a good football environment and facilities. A lot of nice smaller stadiums and they're trying to build something. Most influential is the Americas and now it's normal for decent European based players to go over there too.

I enjoy the colour and variation of teams over there but can't get myself to watch much or really take the time to follow it.

Remember when McGree signed for Charlotte ages in advance? Thank god that never took off.

Piol linked to Real Salt Lake. Rowles deal imminent.

Surely though it's a positive sign that MLS have been looking at our players. Seems we are getting noticed

I'm not bothered as long as they're playing. Clearly someone is scouting the A League and the European based Australians too.

As an MLS fan (who likes learning about A-League/Aussie youth development) - I can provide an explanation.

MLS made an intentional decision in 2021 to start buying young foreign players - with the express intention of selling for a profit along with elevating league play.

Its taken a few years - both to fine tune recruitment and to build out competent scouting (entertaining work in progress!)

However - it only takes a few successes like the ones below for more and more MLS teams to get onboard.

Jhon Duran - Chicago Fire --> Aston Villa (~20M)
Miguel Almiron - Atlanta United ----> Newcastle (~20M)
Thiago Almada Atlanta United ---> Botafogo (~20M) (soon OL - thanks multi-club ownership!)

Don't get me wrong - the examples above are outsized successes - most are more modest or dumpster fires. MLS teams stepping on rakes will never not be funny : )

With rule changes this year - you can now sacrifice your third Designated/Marquee player slot for an additional U22 slot (basically to encourage cheaper teams that weren't leaning in to maximally using DP slots to invest even more in young players) - so this may increase even more.

Historically - MLS has mostly focused on South America for this (with some eastern Europe) - but this is slowly expanding. Cleary - Australia's excellent recent youth development has been noticed in the past few years and is considered an opportunity.

Many don't rate MLS so this may be bad news - totally fair perspective - its not the best and i don't know where it falls in the grand scheme of things. The silver lining might be:

1. Usually expectation is very clear for all parties that player will be sold when a decent offer comes in.
2. The player is deemed good enough to get playing time in very short order - they are not long term developmental projects.
