No love for the Spider?

Same Spider who was signed by AC Milan, then one of the top 3 clubs in the world?

Thanks for the Olver reference. Always good to learn further. Shame it doesn't appear that he was ever involved with the Socceroos post playing days.

Zeljko mostly remembered for his howler v croatia. Had a couple of decent seasons in europe tho

Ryan is probably equal 2nd with bosnich, if bosnich maintained his peak he would be first. Schwarzer had 15 good seasons at the top which is insane

Some others that deserve to be mentioned. Jack Reilly our GK at the 1974 WC. John Filan and Frank Juric had good careers overseas.

Agree. Matt Ryan was left off the list because despite appearing for the NT he's actually a very average goalkeeper. I can't actually believe that he made as a professional in Europe, even as a journeyman....

His NT appearances due to the massive fall in goalkeeping standards which I'd assume is because of the type of coaching and instruction these goalies get from the KNVB goalkeeping programmes.

And it shows. He's probably A League or NPL standard in terms of his technical abilities.
Oh sod off. You've got to be a troll account. The tone of your posts has a ring....

I voted for Schwarzer. For club and country his record is the best.

As Australia's best keeper i.e. NT keeper Ryan stacks up pretty well.

great analysis! Club and country record pretty well correlated too!

Michael Petkovic up there ahead of Jason Petkovic is a travesty lol.

Where's the greatest socceroo GK of all time Michael Turnbull?

Clint Bolton was a very good keeper but was playing when Schwarzer was in his prime.

Definitely no love for the drunken gambling addict. He was shit when Hiddink gave him a chance at the 2006 finals.
He was thrown in cold by the cake munching Durchie coach.. Milann, especially the Milan of that era didnt sign "shit" goalkeepers.

yep good chart.
MS hands down is top of the tree - club career alone smokes anyone and will be a long time before any GK of ours emulate's his UK career.
Ryan should be a fair 2nd overall club/NT.

The rest are very good smokey's/figuritively speaking and some mentioned going as far back as '74 deserve the mentions (wow forgot some of those names).
I've always rated Vuka actually and won 2 medals at Genk but I'm no GK expert like I know PJennings is.
Bozza and Spider, you could prob put them together as their own worst enemies ruinning their careers, could have should have.

Because they don't have tik tok and gaming in Spain, Germany, France and Italy?

Way too simplistic.

they have football culture and a much greater population

Australia's edge historically was an outdoor culture and hard work ethic. That's now been completely nullified by the modern generation who possess neither of those attributes.

It is a bit perplexing that Brad Jones and Michael Petkovic are put in the poll, whilst Matt Ryan, who has played many games as a Socceroo, isn't put in the poll mix?

Moreover, Ryan has played a lot of recent games for the Socceroos.

There is also the added function of the modern keeper. The ability to play as a sweeper.

A modern keeper has three parts of the job - shot stopper as a line keeper, ability to command the penalty box and sweeper. Some of the keepers are better in some areas than others. Some of the older keepers listed in the poll struggled as sweepers.
Decentric makes a good point.

These days keepers are required to be able to play as a sweeper. Not only do they have to dispense with their hands but they must be proficient with their feet. Something that needs to be taught to modern keepers is the weight of a pass: the stronger you hit the ball, the further that it will roll.

In the NT context, I'd have Schwarzer starting with Bozza on the bench. If a game went to a shootout, I'd sub on Bozza. Schwarzer has that long term consistency, but I reckon I'd value Bozza for those individual moments of invincibility in the big games.
