Summer of Cricket thread

It does, but it does also suck as a Heat fan. Not sure what is happening but Khawja and Marnus finished the test on Sunday, but are only available for the 16th Jan Heat game. Not even the one this Saturday.

If you have having these big name players as part of your promo and as the main people to come watch, they need to play more than 1 game.
Players selected for the Sri Lankan tour have been told to wind up their T20 commitments by Cricket Aus.

No he has not DC. Like I wrote, he has never toured Sri Lanka. Averages a poor @26 in India with his only decent score against Bangladesh way back in 2017. Josh Philippe is younger and has proven he can master sub cont spinners on their soil. But looks to have been ignored. Sure I read that Tim Paine was plugging for Josh Philippe to tour too.
I've read, and I've accepted what I've read from journos, many who I've been critical of for not doing their background research, that Handscomb has ostensibly had success playing spin on the Subcontinent.

So I've taken it as fact that Handscomb can play spin with qualified success on Asian spinning wickets. I have no data to substantiate this though!

He is a decent keeper too. Importantly, he has played a lot more recent Shield cricket than Inglis - who unless has been selected as back up keeper, IMO should not be going as a back up batter.

I think Corey Rocc has been unlucky to miss out. I think he has outbowled Murphy in the Shield ever since Murphy returned from playing Test cricket for Aus. Albeit Murphy showed a lot of promise playing Tests.

Ok Pasquali has spoken guys. All Aussie cricket on this one thread.

Australia squad for Sri Lanka Tests: Steve Smith (c), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Travis Head (vc), Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Matt Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Nathan McSweeney, Todd Murphy, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster

Four surprises, McSweeney, Connolly and Abbott picked, Handscomb omitted. Biggest with Sweeny back, tells me Bailey was shamed into an embarrassing back flip.
What about Inglis as a surprise?

I watch West Aus play every year at Bellerive in the Shield. I'm not sure I've ever seen him play?

Abbott - a rough selection. I feel from seeing him and pace rivals Doggett, McAndrew, Gannon, Paris, Bird, Bell, Neser, Tremain (last season) on the Bellerive pitch, they all offer more. Most are match-fit too. Most have taken more Shield wickets in the last few seasons.

I don't subscribe to the notion , that George Bailey cites, that hanging around the Aussie One Day team is a genuine criterion for evaluating match-fit Test players.

Tell them to read his stats in the s/c mate. Averages @28, but to be fair his best score, 72, was in '23 on his last India tour. I think his age went against his selection this time.

Scored two shield centuries before white ball interrupted.

Imo, CA has a soft spot for him, with he being the one that hit Phil Hughes. But his career stats dont back up this sentimental call on him. That is what baffles me.

See this is what annoys me. Usman and Marnus have been advertised as appearing on the 16th. It has even been advertised by the official BBL and CA media channels. Surely they would not advertise this without any certainty.

If they did know they wouldn't be playing, then CA is ripping off fans.

Just saw an article by Justin Langer, where he claimed the Aus players put a lot of pressure on selection panel, lead by Bailey, and coach, McDonald, pleading to keep selecting their underperforming mates.

This supposedly happened with Marsh. Langer lauded Bailey and McDonald, for selecting Webster over Marsh, despite players urging them to keep selecting Marsh.

IMO there was never any doubt! Webster should have been selected some time ago.

This might have happened with Labu and Usman. I've read a lot of data, but essentially these two have averaged in the 20s for some time - appalling.

I've also read where Cam Green loved having Will Pucovski in the team - where he had another player of his generation to knock around with.

It is toxic scenario where old men, lobby older men, to keep selecting underperforming old men!

I think Hunt and Corey Rocc have been harshly left out.

I've read Bailey saying how much they liked Connolly around the Aus One Day squad, but Corey Rocc has done a lot of hard graft bowling in the Shield. CC is selected as a spinning all rounder, instead of Maxwell. I'm happy for that, because Maxwell has played no red ball cricket.

32 yo Abbott should not be there IMO. Watching them live, much prefer 30 yo Doggett. If not Gabe Bell, and McAndrew, and even the older Tremain, Paris and Gannon, have taken a lot of recent Shield wickets. Fergus O'Neill is only same pace as Webster at mid 120s.

I am happy that CC was selected.

This is a tricky time a lot of the test squad are nearing the end of their career, we need to slowly phase in replacements that must be a mixture of young guys like CC and more experienced players like Webster.

Boland is a big plus because it seems like he can play for a few years.

Guys like Webster and CC can potentially reduce some of the bowling workload on Green and allow for Green to be rested.

Green is a critical player for us because he could have a long career and contribute a lot.

For quicks we do need to give some older players a shot, but also some young guys if they have potential.

Who are the young guys that can bowl 140+? Boland and Webster can bowl the slower stuff and I'm not sure we want Green bowling long stints of fast bowling.

I like CC being young. I’m just worried he hasn’t played enough red ball cricket in recent times.

I don’t watch any BBL, so I don’t know the players playing it.

I like to think I know all Shield players. I don’t think I’ve seen CC play at all?

On Boland I’ve just read somewhere the poor bloke has a knee issue!

Damn bad news on Boland.

I don't watch much BBL, but I caught a game recently and the performance from CC got me interested.

I am wondering about other young players I might not know about.

It is hard to judge the standard of BBL, a lot of the batting seems to be swing and hope. If you get out leave it to the next guy.

Luck seems to be a factor in T20.

CC seemed composed with bat and ball, that was what I found impressive. But he did have the odd lapse.

T20 is probably why many of the players pressing for test selection are not obvious.

I barely know what is happening with shield cricket these days, media coverage seems very low profile.

CC debuted in last seasons shield final! Made 90 in quick time in his first dig and looked completely at home.

Not a bad start to a FC career:
309 runs in 6 digs across 4 games with three 50s and a top score of 90 (on debut in a shield final), with an average of 61.80

Good luck to you following T20.

T20 has made cricket the second most popular sport in the world.

We as cricket snobs in the Members think of it as 'Australian baseball'!

Sadly, many T20 cricket followers don't even know the Shield players on the cusp of Test selection, because T20 is so dominant in the media. Many BBL players are nowhere good enough to play for their states fo rthe Shield in red ball cricket. Yet the public views them as superstars.

Impressive - but I don't think he warrants Test squad selection after 4 Shield games to tour Sri Lanka.

How many has CC played this season?

How many red ball games beyond WA?

To rate a guy bowling defensively for 4 overs in T20, usually with no close in fielders compared to trying to bowl them out as in red ball cricket - and - as you aptly suggest, swing and hope in T20, is very different to a long sessions with attacking fielders close to the bat, waiting to snap up just one mistake in red ball cricket, is quite different.

England Lions are touring. So matches against a CAX1 and then an unofficial Test against Aust A. This is good chance to see some of our best next gens testing themselves against the best prospects in England. Guys like Charlie Anderson, Raf MacMillan and Ryan Hicks.
