Summer of Cricket thread

Received some amazing info at the Women's Ashes ODI match a few days ago.

A nameless official within the CA structure said there three different organisations in the Aus cricket structure.

1. Cricket Aus

Anything they say goes. They are the top jurisdiction.

2. BBL franchises - Melb Renegades, Perth Scorchers, Hobart Hurricanes, etc. They have more power than state associations.

3. State cricket associations - NSW Cricket, Cricket Victoria, etc. At times BBL franchises issue edicts for state teams not to play certain players they want - to rest them instead.

*Recently a BBL Franchise wanted to play a certain pace bowler. Cricket Aus said they could not play him, as he was needed for a ODI for the Aus national team. He sat out a BBL game and was rested, then made 12th man for Aus ODI team!

* Adam Zampa wants to play Test cricket. He lives in Byron Bay. He doesn't play Sydney FG grade cricket, a prerequisite for NSW Shield selection. Zampa doesn't train with the NSW Shield squad. NSW selected Tanveer Sangha as wrist spinner for NSW. Cricket Aus over-ruled NSW selectors and said they had to pick Zampa!

* One guy who a few of us know elsewhere on the interweb, Mike, claimed Cricket Aus once contracting players to their organisation, including T20, and One Day specialists, and want them playing come what may. Verified yesterday, by my CA source, this is supposedly true!

I was moaning about a few selection decisions to tour Sri Lanka to my source. According to my 'source' Cricket Aus were fighting to have players selected for Sri L, who don't even play red ball cricket in the Shield, or very little.

I just can't believe they are undermining their own domestic FC comp - the Shield. Handscomb ( apparently highest number of 50s in last season or two), Corey Rocc and Henry Hunt have all been overlooked. Incredibly, Maxwell ( no FC cricket), Zampa ( virtually none), were close to selection. Ridiculous! It is like National Premier League players being selected for the Socceroos!

Cooper Connolly ( 4 Shield games in his whole career), Josh Inglis ( very few recent Shield games) and Abbott ( only 2 Shield games this year) were selected for Sri L. The latter duo are CA contracts.

Pretty tough on pace bowlers taking a lot of Shield wickets like McAndrew, Doggett, Bell, Paris, O'Neill, Steketee, Chris Tremain; Handscomb and Hunt ( batters); Cory Rocc ( finger spinner), Swepson ( wrist spinner); and Peirson ( keeper); being overlooked after playing well in the Shield for the last season or two.

The other 4 state associations strongly believe NSW and Victorian players are more favourably looked on by selectors. That the other 4 states have to be considerably better to be selected.

One big reason why I never liked CA's decision to change the old Big Bash format (which was I guess still technically linked to the Shield/State structure). I know the current structure allows for expansion, so I'm guessing that was the main reason why (being linked to cities, rather than states)
Interesting?

I don’t mind T20 and ODIs, but Test cricket is the pinnacle and is a unique sport.

No other sport requires the application of skill, judgement and patience for hours on end.

I think the vast majority of cricket fans' favourite format is now T20.

I think the likes of Glen Maxwell is getting to the end of his career and wished he had devoted more time to red ball cricket.

I think in the cricket literature, the T20 international team tournaments and franchise comps within countries will be forgotten, as there are so many, and it will be Test players that have precedence in cricket history print.

I thought it was - the city model as opposed to the state model for expansion reasons.
Yes, I think that was interesting as well - but it's caused this disconnect (well.. even more-so) between CA and the First Class level in the country.

Matter of the larger the population the larger the talent pool. NSW , specially has been the provider of many other state cricketers, some of which have played for Australia, going back decades.

Does not surprise me in the least given McDonald and Bailey front the selection table, both were far better white ballers than red ballers. The CA board needs to show some balls and send both packing.

It is infuriating mate. Your CA mole is giving you plenty of controversial info. Be careful tho, that their own mole does not read this thread as the other may be looking for another job.

I figured something like this was going on given that on occasions shield players are 'rested' yet we are told they are injured.
Josh Inglis ( very few recent Shield games)
Agree with him. Two shield centuries this season, worthy back up keeper and reserve batsman for India and Sri Lanka series in my view.

No doubt Bailey was a better white ball cricketer but no way with Ronnie. His red ball stats are far superior in almost every category.

Re read them. FC stats. Mac 96 games @39- 11 tons, George 160 @38- 25 tons. Fact is both were unable to make the step needed for Tests. Anyway moot point as I was talking about white ball and how both tend to back that format ahead of red ball..

DC our boy Tim Ward has posted his third 100 on the trot. Have said that once he overcomes this apparent barrier in the 70s/80s he will score masses of centuries as he has both the technique and mental capacity. Like to see Mikes expression about now as he always trashed him because he came from Sydney.

Looked up the scores in the Aus A game.

Ward has done very well!

120 is a decent knock!

Check your PM. I've just messaged you.

I was a bit late and beastly careless, but even as a member since missing the first opportunity just a few hour after th game, when HH qualified for the final, as member, I can't get tickets for the final tomorrow night!

Gee, our state is guilty of only supporting winners!

Nobody wants to attend Shield unless Tas makes the final at home. The final is sold out. Heaps of family and friends I didn't know even like cricket, suddenly want me to get them into Tas Cricket Members for tomorrow night's T20 Final. I can't get myself in!

I've been poring over Shield stats for this season. I've looked at batting and bowling. There are a few surprises.

*Kurtis Patterson, NSW, has had a resurgence and scored lots of runs at a high average - 70 plus to 90 odd. He has played Test cricket. Then faded out. He has only played 3-4 Shield games.

*Handscomb has made runs too. Consistent as a player - to reach 50 most on most occasions of any current Shield player. Albeit Webster missed 2 Shield games to play Aus A, where he scored more 50s.

*Keepers Carey, 4 Shield games in season 20204/5, and Inglis, only 2 current season Shield games, have very high batting averages too.

*At a Meet The Coaches night held by Tas Cricket, I asked Dan Marsh, Hobart Hurricanes female coach, how Lloyd Pope was travelling? He is a red haired, prodigious turning leg spinner from South Aus. DM said he was still bowling those 1 or 2 loose balls per over. DM waxed lyrical about Murphy.

This season in just 3 Shield games, Pope has taken 12 wickets in 3 Shield games. The same as Todd Murphy, from less games. Yet South Aus used Manento ? as spinner when playing Tas. Haven't seen Tanveer Sangha yet, but Pope is the biggest spinner of the ball in Aus ATM. Similar to Warne or MacGill, without their control..

* Riley Meredith - when I've seen him live in the Shield this season he has bowled rubbish - by his own high standards. Can't see the speed gun, but coaches can and he was bowling only 129- 133 kph in the Shield at Bellerive in one spell.

Thought he might have lost his express speed. Then mates from Crick Tas Members said he exceeded 150 kph for the Hurricanes the other night. Moreover, he has taken 12 Shield wickets this season for 3 Shield games played. He is far more durable than other Aus genuine fast bowlers Spencer Johnson, Jhye Richardson ( shoulder surgery) and Morris. Riley M is one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket - and - can bowl in red ball cricket without running out of gas. He may have bowled well in away games from Bellerive this season. Meredith often bowls so quickly all other bowlers from both Shield teams look like medium pacers!

* Both Jackson Bird and O'Neill have taken 22 wickets this season. Bird is too old for Tests, but should have played more Test cricket. According to my sources, and media, O'Neill only bowls the same pace as Beau Webster - mid 120s.

* Henry Hunt - good averages. Not sure if he has scored few runs outside his 3 tons? Why is it only Richie and me, who've noticed this excellent, in form opener? He is a good outfielder too.

* Tim Ward - might have been dropped from Tas Shield side. Now dropped is local favourite Caleb Jewell. Ward has a big average of 70 odd for 3-4 Shield games this season and now 120 against England A.

*Gabe Bell has been a consistent wicket-taker last season and this one. However, in the Aus A game, he only took 1 wicket each innings. What did you think Richie if you watched this game? I thought his easy, economical action, and stamina, with a bit of accurate swing and seam could be more useful than Abbott, who has little stamina, but is potent with the new ball.

* Why does Ashton Agar's name keep coming up for tests? Corey Rocciocioli has replaced him as West Aus's finger spinner, and has done well. Agar bowls darts, with no flight and is a defensive bowler in the Shield. Okay he is a left arm slow bowler, but he doesn't spin the ball much. His brother, Wes Agar, is a pretty fiery, quick opening bowler for South Aus, but his action takes a lot out of him. He emits a huge grunt as he releases the ball. Wes looks a better national team prospect than Ashton ATM.

* Joel Paris, WA. Brilliant left arm swing bowler at Bellerive and has good aggregates for wickets taken. I understand he is under an injury cloud.

* Michael Neser - has bowled some good spells at Bellerive.

* South Aus have a lot of decent players ATM. As do West Aus, but few stand out for higher honours.

* Will Pucovski - feel very sad about his career. Not sure about Konstas, but Puck is the best batter under 30 I've seen live in Aus. Shame he retired. Big Shield average. Lovely, stylish shots!
