World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

oh nice do we have an update saying that?

Vellupilay looks like a sprain and could be ok by next week
About McGree? He's done a few reels on Football Australia so he's clearly taking part normally in sessions. I was concerned he'd be on a monitored list.

Good about Velupillay as the mention of crutches and achilles didn't sound good.

What is even happening? All of our best prospects have been strung along. I get the need to earn it but they have. Of course being a professional means biding your time. Triantis looked dejected when Teague was receiving his cap. Happy for Teague and deserved but the way coaches go on about earning it and then you have underperformers (not Teague) ahead of you makes no sense. This is where Ange lost the room by playing an invalid Kruse or Smith plus having a McGowan double obsession.

So Segecic isn't in any of the Australia squads? I get he's sorting a move but watch hi go to Croatia and then end up on their list. Wtf is going on?
I wonder if Popa is bothered about that goal celebration with the phone drop against the Nix? Botic did the same thing unless he will make the squad?

Nothing wrong having a bit of personality with goal celebrations but Popa maybe seems the type of guy to be bothered about these sort of things?

we are allergic to our best players for some reason

don't want to play around with segecic and tempt him to turn his head
Sorry, not a big fan of Segecic. As an super sub player he can be the difference but whenever he started for SFC, he was not able to have the same impact as when he came on in the second half. I don't know why but a new club maybe capable of improving his performance.

having a super sub is still pretty useful

he chuckled about it in an interview so hopefully he isn't too bothered

Well he's gone full pro ex club players and anti anyone who's ever shown him up i.e. Mariners players, so there may be something there. Not to mention his bias to his sons.

For as much as I dislike Popas selections the idea he wouldn't choose someone because they wanted to be called up to a point they are making public statements to the effect sounds a bridge too far.

The key thing I don't like in reference to the call ups is he's not giving direction as to how to be called up. He goes with Bratten and Caceres, I take it because they're veterans that have leadership potential, and in the same breath choosing yengi (a clubless player) and Okon jr who's playing Benfica B's. He prioritizes Teague and O'Neill over Triantis and Balard.

Atleast with Ange and Arnie, they stated publicly overseas was a priority, and match time. Popa's selections process seems to be jobs for the boys, the boys sons, anyone over 32. How is it professional?

That's right. We spoke about this on the podcast if anyone missed it

That's right. It's highly contradictory and it's ignored our most merit based players. What's next? Balard to Martinique or something?

Ah I knew this could happen, if he’s off to Greece then Popa along with the FA have got blood on their hands for allowing this to slip.
If he wants to play for Greece good luck to him. That means he wasn't committed to Australia. We can do without players who don't want to play for us.

Point being he should have been capped in previous windows but Popa refused to use him.
The choice could be out of his hands by now, but they would rather put duke on with 10 to go in a game that didn't require him, than sure up youth.
You need to play someone 3 times to prevent them jumping ship. That would take at least two international windows. Putting them on for 10 seconds isn't enough these days. If these kids lack enough pride in Australia to want to play for someone else then I think we don't need them.

That sucks. It seems McGree and Metcalfe have been doing well in camp so we have options.
At least Vellupillay has proved he can score for the roos. Metcalfe on the other hand no chance in hell.

That 2nd goal 1 on 1 when Nichan scored against Indonesia if that was Duke or Metcalfe that wouldn't be a goal.
