Expansion Thread

And we currently use two of them, that people are saying are too big.

The Parramatta stadium was built for WSWFC & PRLFC, Since then they have failed to show up.

In Australia mostly yes. A few other lower leagues too. But in a lot of leagues, clubs own their infrastructure. Even own their own marketing and merchandise production

I'm not discussing the definition of professional. I was discussing its long term viability.
Football viability is unquestioned... we will always play it in one form or another... insistence on corporate facilities and "match day you tube experience" and Instagram friendly moments is another conversation entirely.

Exactly ..... I caught WU v Victory on the TV the other day.... brand new, perfectly sized stadium and it looked empty for the 5-10 mins I watched.... can;'t complain about facilities... especially NOT in the Aleague.

You to got at least bring in 14 teams in, the bye makes it awkward for teams that can’t play every week, for example Melb City hadn’t played in 3 weeks and looked very flat on the weekend that’s not normal to experience something like that.

I've lost count even here.

Following the wiki page on this, it's the 5th bid, but still the same organisation as the third (but with different/non-existent financial backers)
Its really the last available "market" left for expansion in the APL model of doing things.... unless they really do go overseas with expansion licenses to Indonesia and Pacific Islands like they threatened...

Maybe Canberra is becoming wise and not uniting for a franchise, and looking to connect through NST....?

It's interesting (and equally concerning) that this Canberra bid has really struggled with getting enough money just to get going. Are they going to be able to take those losses for the foreseeable future? It's funny that it really wasn't that long ago that the 11th and 12th licence were up for grabs and we had a good number of clubs (including yours) with cash in hand ready to sign up. Now, we have aleague clubs struggling to find buyers and a new licince struggling to be sold.

Yeah from the outside it really does look like a zombie league at the moment... just lurching along from one round to the next... I really wonder how some of these clubs are really doing financially if a tent pole club like Victory is losing money hand over fist?

I still think they will get to 16. If Canberra can' t make it this year I can see a Tasmanian team pushed by Pignata, a Gold Coast or ipswich team, if Canberra can't make it a South Island NZ team out of the new Christchurch Stadium

Don't know about Gold Coast going at it again.... IF Canberra can't make it how is Tassie even considered?

Tassie is being pushed by Tony Pignata and did seem to be getting Govt - state and federal support. The problem seems to be deciding on the right site for a NTC (National Training Centre) program with a 10,000 rectangular show pitch. This was probably earlier this year but they were positioning themselves to jump in if Canberra fails - otherwise being the 15th or 16th team.
